Consecration” is a term used in the Church to describe the act of setting something apart for the service of God. Both people and objects can be consecrated. Consecration “makes holy” the person, place, or object that is consecrated. When you make an act of consecration, you are making a serious commitment to faithfully dedicate yourself to God’s grace at work in your life. You are setting yourself apart from this world and committing yourself to do the work of God throughout your life.

When consecrating yourself to the Virgin Mary, you are consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary. As Pope John Paul II explained, “Consecrating ourselves to Mary means accepting her help in offering ourselves and the whole of mankind to Him who is holy, infinitely holy; it means accepting her help—by having recourse to her motherly heart” (May 13, 1982). When consecrating yourself to Jesus, you are offering to Him a total surrender as a pledge of fidelity. It means you are wishing to follow Jesus in a more exacting way and are dedicated to His worship and to obedience to divine will in all things. The two prayers of consecration, to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, are said daily, and help the soul to remain close to Jesus and Mary.
