Spiritual warfare prayer to remove generational spirits? Do you think there are generational spirits afflicting you and your family? This reflection is on the power of sin in our families, and how Christ wants to heal us.
Praying Spiritual Warfare Prayers
You may wonder, is a spiritual warfare prayer to remove generational spirits licit? What is the history of belief in generational spirits and curses, and what does the Church say about them? Is it scriptural to pray against generational spirits?
The idea of generational spirits or generational curses was condemned by the International Association of Exorcists (AIE) in 2018 and in November 2024, the Spanish Bishops’ Conference published a doctrinal note criticizing this practice as well. In their 2018 congress, AIE warned against the practice of healing the family tree and the belief in generational spirits. The idea that demons or ancestral sins in a family are passed down to its descendants contradicts Catholic doctrine and can cause spiritual harm.
Why did they say this?
Baptism is a complete exorcism of the soul, makes a person born again and wipes out Original Sin. Demonic manifestation is possible, but believing that a generational spirit has power over you or that a curse controls your destiny negates the power of Christ to free you.
Did you know that belief in generational spirits and curses is a modern phenomena that was recently invented in Protestant Christianity? Methods to remove generational spirits began as late as the 1960s within the Protestant Pentecostal movement in the United States. A few key 20th century Protestant authors popularized the idea such as Kenneth McAll, Rebecca Brown, and Marilyn Hickey.
There is no historic reference to generational spirits in the Church fathers or the doctors of the Church. Generational spirits are not mentioned in the Catechism, in papal documents, or in church councils. Furthermore, generational spirits are not Biblical according to a 52 page report in the American Journal of Biblical Theology by Scott E. Osenbaugh, Th.M.
Father Rogelio Alcántara, chairman of the doctrinal commission of the Archdiocese of Mexico, prepared a thorough study of the practice of praying against generational spirits and it’s history. He states: “The supposed philosophical foundation of the so-called ancestral damage is very similar to what is popularly known as ‘karma,’ an idea derived from the Hindu religion.”
Additionally, the Spanish Bishops’ Conference concluded the following:
In contrast to those who assert the intergenerational transmission of ancestral sins—and relying upon the Word of God—we wish to affirm that no one can be held accountable for the sins of others, nor should anyone be held responsible for the sins of previous generations; rather, each individual is responsible for his or her own life and his or her own sins.
As was already affirmed in the Old Testament: “The one who sins is the one who will die; the son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor shall the father bear the guilt of the son” (Ez 18:20).
Is Belief in Generational Spirits Neo-Gnostic or New Age?
Many Catholic and mainline Protestant theologians warn against belief in generational spirits because this belief is seen as a way to blame invisible forces rather than taking personal responsibility for our sinful habits. Others call it a neo-Gnostic heresy that blends concepts of spiritual warfare with an unbiblical approach to ancestral, “curse-breaking” rituals.
Fr. Peter Joseph of Wagga Wagga, Australia explains:
It is typical of the new agers to teach others to look elsewhere than themselves for the source of their problems. This is a big problem in today’s world, namely refusing to take responsibility for our own choices and decisions. So some seek to blame their parents, or ancestors, or evil spirits, or a curse that was placed upon them. It is also extremely imprudent to tell people afflicted with fears that their problems are caused by demons or ancestors binding them. Such explanations are only calculated to make them worse. What they do need is formation in the virtues of fortitude and trust in God.
We all know that in certain families there is a bigger tendency to alcoholism or gambling or reckless daring or other vices. But we also know that within a single family there are some siblings who are like chalk and cheese. Our basic temperament may be a given, but our character, which is what we do with it, is up to us. If we cooperate with the grace of God, we can overcome temptations, unhealthy proclivities and bad examples. We can acquire new virtues. From sinful parents, God can and does produce saints! Only mindless determinism tries to lock people into a box for the rest of their lives.
So how do you deal with sins in the family? How do you pray against sinful habits that seem to be ‘inherited’ through the generations of your family?
Do I Need to Get Rid of Generational Spirits?
Is deliverance from a curse or generational demons necessary?
A few years ago I had a discussion with a priest friend of mine about evil spirits and family curses. It seems everyone now adays is talking about curses.
What is the definition of a curse? We should start there, so that you are fully informed on what exactly it means to say someone is ‘cursed’ in light of sacred Scripture, because the idea of curses in pagan religions is quite different. The two are not the same. Pagans might believe that curses have magical powers and they cannot be overcome without supernatural means. But the curses in the Old Testament had a different meaning. They were the consequence of going against the divine order and breaking God’s covenant.
My priest friend informed me that the most efficacious remedy for anyone who thinks they are suffering from a curse or evil spirits is to get baptized and then get immersed in the faith. Live a life of Christian virtue and holiness. When you learn the faith and grow in virtue you become strong and the demonic strongholds in your life will naturally come undone.
He also told me that the Church teaches that the only sin that we inherit through our birth is Original Sin. Baptism wipes away Original Sin and when we live in a state of sanctifying grace we are protected from curses by God. This means that the sinful habits were are exposed to in our families have an effect on us in relational ways and will influence us by possibly giving us tendencies to sin in similar ways. It also causes us to materially suffer the effects of our ancestors’ sins (Exodus 34:7).
It it is reassuring to know that God protects us from evil when we are in a state of sanctifying grace and are frequenting the Sacraments.
When we are struggling with habitual deadly sins, however, we will find ourselves afflicted by evil spirits who know our weaknesses and desire to keep us trapped in our sin. Evil spirits are continually accusing us night and day. They use our memories to remind us of our unworthiness and damnable qualities and our emotions to make us feel anger, sadness, fearfulness, and despairing. Mortal sins in a family will invite demons into your home life, but this is not the same thing as the idea of generational spirits attached to you through the sins of your ancestors. If we are fully baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, then we have been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and we’ve been adopted into the kingdom of God. There is no curse or generational spirit that has authority over us when we are an adopted son or daughter of God.
There are many sins that seem to run in families, through generations. We often see addictive habits and even forms of abuse that run in families. This is a struggle that involves our free will to choose sin over holiness. Sometimes our parents make these choices and they affect us temporally. Sin has consequences. But you are not responsible for the sins of your ancestors.
If you believe you are a victim of a satanic curse and you are not a Christian, then the only true cure is to repent and be fully Baptized and then live a life of holiness in the Church. The medicine you need to overcome the dark kingdom is Christian initiation and a life of intimacy with Christ in the Eucharist. Only Baptism can remove Original Sin, and when you are Baptized you are Born Again into the family of God.
The one sin that most afflicts Christians and causes a door to the demonic is unforgiveness. You can’t keep score or hold grudges. You must forgive the person who harmed you, whether they are known to you or not, and forgive anyone who has transgressed against you and caused you pain and suffering. This is vital for your deliverance from evil. Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:12: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those that trespass against us.” So we must fully forgive if we want to be fully forgiven.
But Doesn't Exodus 20 Prove Generational Spirits?
We read in Exodus 20 a warning from God regarding families who hate him and are part of the kingdom of darkness. We also see a promise for those who love him and keep his commandments and how he blesses them.
Is this idea in support of generational curses?
If we look at Scripture as a whole, the Bible condemns the notion that children can be punished by God for the sins of their parents. So how are we to read the passage of Exodus 20? If we look at in in context, it is directly referring to worshipping false idols and abandoning the faith that God has handed down to his people.
In other words, the sins of the parents, who left the faith and set a bad example for their children, has an effect on the next generation. Their actions will have consequences that naturally affect their children; their children may also reject the faith as a result of their example, as it was not handed down. If their children’s children also follow this bad example, they will also experience a worse result. So the passage from Exodus is a warning to parents that they will not only condemn themselves through unrepentant sin, but their actions will negatively effect future generations:
God punishes the Wicked to the Third or Fourth Generation
Book of Exodus, Chapter 20:3-7
You shall not have other gods beside me. You shall not make for yourself an idol or a likeness of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or serve them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their ancestors’ wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; but showing love down to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not invoke the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished anyone who invokes his name in vain.
Remember what we talked about? The idea of being cursed in Scripture refers to breaking God’s covenant, refusing to obey his precepts and walk in his ways.
Let’s look at John 8:34-36: Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free.”
This means that when you accept Christ and are Baptized, you are freed from Original Sin. There can be no generational curse over you. Now if you have attachment to sin, then you have to turn away from it with God’s grace.
Let’s also look at the Gospel of Mark.
The Gospel of Mark is filled with miracles performed by Jesus and many of the stories involve casting out demons. In Mark 9 we hear a story about a demoniac boy who was completely healed by Jesus.
Generational Spirits in Gospel of Mark
Reflect on the Gospel of Mark 9:14-29
When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. Immediately on seeing [Jesus], the whole crowd was utterly amazed. They ran up to him and greeted him.
He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”
Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit. Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.”
He said to them in reply, “O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.”
They brought the boy to him. And when he saw him, the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions. As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around and foam at the mouth.
Then [Jesus] questioned his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”
He replied, “Since childhood. It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
Jesus said to him, “‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.”
Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!”
Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering, rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!”
Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out. He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, “He is dead!”
But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up. When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private, “Why could we not drive it out?”
He said to them, “This kind can only come out through prayer and fasting.”
Jesus also has compassion on you, and only He can restore you to wholeness in the same way he restored demoniacs in the Bible.
How?
If you draw close to the Lord and pray for the grace to overcome sin, he will help you. Do everything in your power to fill your life with Christ and to renew your mind. Pray every day, get rid of things that cause you to fall into the sinful habits, and find a Christian community that will keep you accountable and help you grow in holiness.
Prayer throughout the day is a wonderful way to stay focused on God. You can pray as you do things by lifting your heart to God in gratitude. In this way the demons will take less precedence in your mind and you will be filled with the love of Christ. This is how you overcome evil.
Prayer of Faith in Jesus to Exorcise Demons
Lord Jesus Christ,
You came down from heaven and became Incarnate of the Virgin Mary to rescue me from the kingdom of darkness. You gave me an image of the Father by showing me Yourself. You are the Eternal Word of God and by knowing You I come to know the Father. You’ve sent me the Holy Spirit, who consoles me and teaches me the Truth.
I thank you and praise You for your great love, mercy, and sacrifice to save me from death and eternal separation from your kingdom. I know you can do all things. Nothing is impossible for You.
Lord, You know everything about me, my family, and all the sins I struggle with through my own concupiscence. There are sins that I habitually commit that were introduced to me by my parents, who also sinned in this same way. I ask you to give all of us the grace of conversion and the gift of virtue so that we can overcome these sinful habits and break free from the evil spirits that tempt us daily to sin against You in particular habitual ways. Help us love each other and be a holy family.
Jesus, You have the power to exorcise demons. You freed the boy who suffered convulsions by commanding the mute and deaf spirit to come out of him. You hold power over the kingdom of darkness and what You command the demons must obey. Lord, have mercy on our family who has not been a model of holiness. Please help us be holy and give us the graces necessary to overcome habitual sins, grow in virtue, and learn to love each other better.
Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, I ask You to help me fully forgive all sins committed against me by members of my family. You know the depth of suffering hidden in my heart. You tell us in scripture that the pure of heart will inherit eternal life. Let me be pure of heart, full of charity. Let me hate the sins that I habitually commit so that I willfully turn away from them. Let me love my family members who are steeped in habitual sin in the same way that You do.
I pray this prayer from my heart in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
