Prayer of Intercession for Doctors and Surgeons
For the Blessing of Doctors and Surgeons
Lord Jesus Christ, the Divine Physician,
We thank you and praise you for showing us all how to love the afflicted in body, mind, and soul. We praise you and adore you for your miraculous healing touch in all our lives through the doctors and surgeons who care for us. The Bible shows us how you loved us as a great physician of body, mind, soul, and spirit during your earthly ministry. You also taught us how to suffer for your glory by the way of the Cross, and while carrying it, actively loving our neighbors with perfect love. We thank you and praise you for your loving presence and for your Sacred Heart of love for all mankind. We thank you for the grace you give us when we are sick and suffering and in need of a physician to help us and heal us.
We thank you for all our doctors and surgeons whom you have given to us. We ask you to bless them [name them] and guide them through divine inspiration by the Holy Spirit as they seek to diagnose and treat all manner of illness and disease in our bodies, especially [name the patient(s)]. Give our doctors and surgeons wisdom, knowledge, understanding, courage, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord as they live out their vocations. Let the Holy Spirit pour out on them as they work in service to those who are sick and in need of healing. Lord, make them aware of their great mission as healers of body, mind, and soul. Help them minister to the needs of [name(s)] and advise us on treatment options. Fill our doctors and surgeons with the fire of the Holy Spirit in their daily work and help them strive to imitate your merciful love as they counsel and advise all their patients. Bless [name them] abundantly.
Lord, please enlighten our doctors and surgeons to know the best treatment options available. Guide their decisions when they diagnose, treat, medicate, or operate. Give them hearts that are compassionate and merciful. Help them see the least of humanity and the most vulnerable as images of your divine Heart so that they can love patients with the love that radiates from your merciful Heart.
Lord Jesus Christ, bless our doctors and surgeons with abundant grace throughout all their medical studies and research efforts. Help [name them] come to know the best treatment modalities for each patient, and especially [name(s)]. Grant our doctors and surgeons the grace to love and serve the sick in both mind and body on their longest and toughest days of service as physicians. Strengthen them with your Holy Spirit and your loving presence with each difficult encounter, and help them be an image of You to those who are suffering and under their care, especially [name(s)].
We ask all this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, AMEN.
Saint Luke, please pray for us!
Saint Cosmas, please pray for us!
Saint Damian, please pray for us!
AMEN.
Saints Cosmas and Damian, Patron Saints of Doctors and Surgeons
Saints Cosmas and Damian lived during the third century in Arabia. They both studied medicine in Syria and practiced in the port city of Aegeae, which is in modern-day Turkey. They were very skilled, ancient physicians who provided medical care to the poor who couldn’t afford treatment. They refused payment for their services, which earned them the title of “anargyroi”. This act of merciful charity toward their countrymen led many under their care to convert to Christianity as a result.
Saint Cosmas and Damian are the patron saints of doctors and surgeons. They are also patron saints of dentists and pharmacists and for all those suffering from sicknesses.
Both Cosmas and Damian were persecuted under the Roman emperor Diocletian. They were arrested for their faith and asked to renounce Christ, but they refused. As a result they were tortured and then martyred for their faith by beheading. The Church remembers them on the Feast Day of Saints Cosmas and Damian every year on September 26.

Michael, thank you for your loving response. God is so merciful that he forgives us every time we repent of our sins. He knows your heart and he loves you more than you can ever comprehend. Your comment reminded me of St. Paul, who wrote in Romans 7:15 the following, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate to do.” Today is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and there is a tradition on this day to pray Psalm 51, a prayer of David asking God for forgiveness. God tells us in the Bible that David was a man after his own heart because David, although he was a sinner who had committed many sins against God, was also a man who truly loved God, repented, and amended his life to stop committing the sins. We are fighting a good fight, and we have a Father in heaven who loves us and wants to forgive and give us all the grace necessary to grow in virtue and holiness. If you have confessed and have surrendered this situation to Jesus, trust that God has fully forgiven and let it go. You are a beloved son and precious to the Lord. You are in my prayers!
