The prayer to Our Lady of America was written by Sr. Mary Ephrem in 1956 to help bring America back to God through Mary's intercession.

The devotion to Our Lady of America began in 1956. In the late summer of that year Sr. Mary Ephrem, a kindergarten teacher, was asked to work for a short time at Kneipp Spring Sanitorium. In the few short weeks she spent at Kneipp Springs, her live changed as she entered into deep grace-filled prayer. She felt Our Lady was calling Americans to understand and imitate the Holy Family, and that she was called to promote this to the world.

Sister Mary Ephrem felt this call centered on the “Immaculate Conception”. The Our Lady of America prayer came about on September 26, 1956 when Sr. Mary Ephrem felt inspired to take the title given by the U.S. Bishops: “Our Lady, The Immaculate Virgin, Patroness of America” and shorten the form to “Our Lady of America.”

Over the next four years, through prayer, Eucharistic adoration, and contemplation, Sr. Mary Ephrem’s devotion to the Our Lady of America prayer grew. She discerned that by imitating the Holy Family, being fervent prayer, and frequently participating in the Sacraments, especially confession, this devotion to the Our Lady of America prayer would help Americans become more purified and have an indwelling of the Holy Trinity in their hearts.

Our Lady, The Immaculate Virgin, Patroness of America, pray for us!

To Our Lady of America

A prayer to the Immaculate Conception
Patroness of the United States

O Immaculate Mother, Queen of our country, open our hearts, our homes, and our land to the coming of Jesus, your Divine Son. With Him, reign over us, O heavenly Lady, so pure and so bright with the radiance of God’s light shining in and about you. Be our Leader against the powers of evil set upon wresting the world of souls, redeemed at such a great cost by the sufferings of your Son and of yourself, in union with Him, from that same Savior, Who loves us with infinite charity.

We gather about you, O chaste and holy Mother, Virgin Immaculate, Patroness of our beloved Land, determined to fight under your banner of holy purity against the wickedness that would make all the world an abyss of evil, without God and without your loving maternal care. We consecrate our hearts, our homes, our Land to your Most Pure Heart, O great Queen, that the kingdom of your Son, our Redeemer and our God, may be firmly established in us.

We ask no special sign of you, sweet Mother, for we believe in your great love for us, and we place in you our entire confidence. We promise to honor you by faith, love, and the purity of our lives according to your desire. Reign over us, then, O Virgin Immaculate, with your Son Jesus Christ. May His Divine Heart and your most chaste heart be ever enthroned and glorified among us. Use us, your children of America, as your instruments in bringing peace among men and nations. Work your miracles of grace in us, so that we may be a glory to the Blessed Trinity, Who created, redeemed, and sanctifies us.

May your valiant Spouse, St. Joseph, with the holy Angels and Saints, assist you and us in “renewing the face of the earth.” Then when our work is over, come, Holy Immaculate Mother, and as our Victorious Queen, lead us to the eternal kingdom, where your Son reigns forever as King.

AMEN.

  1. I find this web site such a great tool for prayer especially during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament! I praise God that he led me to this site! The time in adoration goes by so quickly that you want to come earlier amd stay later. There is just so many devotions and meditions. Thank you so much!
    God Bless you

    1. Thank you so much, John, for your gratitude. It is a blessing to know you have been a blessing to someone. Thank you for your continued prayers and time before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Your prayers are powerful for the conversion of souls. May God continue to bless you in your work of salvation through contemplative prayers of adoration. You are a gift to many through your sacrifice for their sake.

  2. I am so blessed to find you the Holy Spirit has led me here. This is such a wonderful webpage that you have made. I was looking for an United States of America prayer and I found this webpage when I ask DuckDuckGo and I am so excited my mother‘s birthday is October 5 and she’ll be 78 this year and I’m dedicating my flower garden on behalf of her birthdate and her and I discovered 21 Saints that day and a lot of them are my favorites and I didn’t realize it. This is gonna be an exciting. spiritual day for my family and I thank you so much.

  3. I am wondering why you use Sister Mildred (Mary Ephrem’s) Prayer to the Immaculate Conception but do not use the correct image that Sister gave us for Our Lady of America. It should have a high gold crown with 12 points, jewels at the base of the crown with the three colors for the three theological virtues, a short veil to the waist, and a cloak held by a gold brooch at the neckline. She should be holding a lily as a sign of the Purity she is asking us to embrace. No sword through her heart but red roses around her heart and a flame from the heart. One foot forward, for she comes to us, a sense of movement toward us, an invitation to accept what she offers.

    1. Hello Anita, I see that you are from the office of Our Lady of America. I would love to host an official image. Please send me an official copy of one with the permission to use it and I would gladly swap it out.
