Suffering from Obsession and Demonic Oppression
“You know Him for he dwells with you."
Gospel of John 14:17
Jesus loves you deeply, and when you are in union with His Most Sacred Heart you are full of joy regardless of your circumstances. He provides a sense of peace to the heart that is so attached to His in filial love. This peace cannot be rivaled by any worldly want or good. It’s unshakeable.
You know this. Instinctively you understand exactly what I am saying.
You have in the past felt this very union, even if but for a moment once in your entire life.
A soul suffering from obsession may have a psychological problem and not be having diabolical obsessions. The soul suffering from either diabolical obsessions and/or demonic oppression will have an aversion toward prayer and sacred objects and should seek spiritual direction from a priest.
If you are Suffering from Obsession, Repent.
Your diabolical obsessions are a mercy from God. Understand in His great love for you He has willed this suffering in order to make you more holy and pure. You have sought out this deliverance because you feel the evil so strongly and are suffering so much from this demonic oppression and the diabolical obsessions, the constant thoughts, they seem to consume your mind and destroy your ability to function normally by their unending constant noise inside your head.
"I want Jesus so to draw me into the flames of His love, so to make me one with Himself, that He may live and act in me."
St. Therese of Lisieux
Diabolical obsessions are not from within your mind. They come from diabolical entities that seek to keep you from the love of Christ by beating you down until you believe you cannot possess the salvation Jesus has called you to. When you are suffering from obsession and have this demonic oppression your only recourse is to learn how to pray against it.
“For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.” Ephesians 6:12
“Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
Catalysts of Salvation:
Overcoming Diabolic Obsessions
The demons who torment you when you have diabolic obsessions will become the very catalysts of your salvation through the Blood of Jesus Christ.
Please hear what I am saying to you.
The very demons who torment you with diabolic obsessions will become the catalysts of your salvation through the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ.
Demonic activity always testifies to Christ being truly God. Read Matthew 8:29. And read Acts 16:16-18, after Christ has risen from the dead and ascended into Heaven.
You need to claim the victory over your diabolic obsessions just as the Apostles did in the Book of Acts. Why do you continue to allow the abuse, my friend in Christ? Why do you allow your mind to continue suffering from obsession? Why do you reject the victory of the empty tomb for yourself?
Christ died for YOU. He rose again to give you victory over your sin, over demonic oppression, and diabolical obsessions.
Diabolical obsessions are the devil’s phenomenal power to hinder your ability to live within the divine will of God. Obsessions in your mind are a tool of the devil to prevent you from achieving spiritual goods and from loving your neighbor as you are commanded to do.
You must repent.
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you of two minds."
James 4:6-8
Perfect Love
God is perfect love. This is the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Love cannot force its will without the consent of the beloved. To do so would be a form of slavery and it would not be love.
God is perfect love.
You must repent of your own free will and give Him your full consent.
“I am all love and I cannot do other than spread it. I am love and I can only give love. My warnings, My complaints and even My punishments in this world are love, pure love. If I have to make use of My justice in the next life, even that is also love. But how is that? It is true that love forgives everything and forgets everything, but Love cannot forgive the lack of love; this is the only thing that love does not forgive.”
Jesus to Bl. Concepcion Cabrera de Armida Priests of Christ (Part 4: Inordinate Love of Self)
Suffering from Obsessions and
Turning Inward toward Self
The diabolical obsessions are pushing you toward sin, and your only recourse is to throw yourself into the arms of Christ completely. If you are suffering from obsession you have to do this.
Otherwise, your situation will remain as it is.
Let me ask you, what do you do when the diabolical obsessions begin? Do you turn immediately toward Christ? Do you commit the sin? Are you habitually committing the sin and then confessing it with no change? Is this a vicious cycle in your life? Has this been going on for years?
Give your full consent to the will of God and fall into the arms of Christ. Completely surrender.
God wants to hear what’s in your heart. He is real and really cares about what troubles you. Speak to Him honestly. Don’t hold back. He knows all and knows what you need before you ask. There is nothing you can’t pray about.
Do not ask God to do things your way. Do not assume you know the answers. Falling into the arms of Christ means letting go of all your control. The weight of your prayer must be on what God wills for you, and not be focused on your will or what you perceive to be within your power. Sin offends God, and He will do everything in His power to help you, outside of going against your own free will.
You HAVE TO ignore the diabolical obsessions and turn from your habitual sin. You must repent fully and relinquish full control over the mind to Christ. Repent and trust in Him to transform your life.
How to Overcome the Diabolical when Suffering from Obsession
Our minds tend to be tied to our egos and our emotions. Diabolical obsessions are inserted memories and thoughts tied to emotions that trigger your spiritual weaknesses. Demons are intelligent beings and can go for the jugular in a weak soul that isn’t disciplined in prayer. With demonic oppression, you will notice patterns of thoughts, and bad memories that have triggered horrible responses by you in the past. In diabolical obsessions these resurface in order to make you a slave to your sin. The devil is a great accuser. He likes to fill your mind with negative emotions, ideas, and thoughts. This is why many of you are suffering from obsession.
Listen carefully to me. Negative thoughts come when your mind is focused on yourself and the world around you. If you are too attached to the things of this world, to your ego, then you will be afflicted by demonic oppression. Rather than wallow in the emotions and thoughts, you must imitate Christ and throw yourself into deep prayer. Make prayer the rhythm of your life. This will break the hold that diabolical obsessions have on your mind and you will stop suffering from obsession.
Jesus Shows us how to
stop suffering from Obsession
Jesus deeply loved John the Baptist. If you recall, just after Mary conceived Jesus, she hurried to her cousin Elizabeth’s house to care for her in her sixth month of pregnancy with John the Baptist. Upon meeting Jesus in utero, John ‘leapt in the womb’.
When Jesus heard of John’s death, of his brutal murder, what did He do?
If you recall the story, John bore witness to the truth of the sin of adultery, and this cost him his head on a platter. This was an evil and heinous treatment of a holy man of God. It was unjust. What does scripture say Jesus did immediately after hearing the news? He withdrew in a boat and went to a deserted place.
Surely this upset Him, but Jesus was resolute to complete the mission given to Him by the Eternal Father. He turned to the Father often in scripture when things were bad, like in the Garden of Gethsemane when He knew Judas had betrayed Him and the soldiers were on their way.
Meditate on This.
When Jesus hears of the brutal beheading of his cousin, the one who went before Him and announced His coming He immediately goes to be by himself, to pray. When He is betrayed by Judas and about to be arrested, He immediately goes to the garden to pray. Why does Jesus do this? He does this because he is always in dialog with the Father. If you follow further in the Gospel, you will see that immediately after John’s beheading, after Jesus prayed, He is approached by a large crowd and He ministers to them and performs a miracle. Immediately after Judas betrays Him, Jesus is arrested and enters into His passion, with such great love that one soldier determined afterward that ‘surely this man was the Son of God.’
Diabolical obsessions dominate your mind when your mind is focused on the ego and not on God. Diabolical obsessions torment your soul because your soul is not in union with Christ. You are enslaved by the evil because you feel disconnected from God. You are under demonic oppression. To reconnect with Christ and to overcome the diabolical obsessions you must first repent fully and turn away from your sin by surrendering your will to God. Once you are able to detach you will stop suffering from obsession.
The Love of God is Greater than Power.
Do you understand this?
Let me repeat that.
The love of God is greater than power.
The weight of your prayer should not be placed on what you can and cannot do, but on the power of the Will of God in your life.
Pray like this:
Eternal Father,
I praise you and I thank you for Your immense love and mercy. I glorify your holy Name. I recognize my sinfulness and all the ways I lack discipline in prayer. I need Your grace and I acknowledge that Your Holy Will is the only true good I should desire in my life. Please forgive me for my selfishness and help me to overcome the attachments that lead me to suffer from obsession. Please help me grow my love for you so that I can have true repentance and a desire to pray. I want to amend my life. I know that with Your help I will overcome the demonic oppression that right now afflicts me daily. I know that with Your grace I will stop suffering from obsession and my mind will once again be at peace. Please increase in me the desire to have a real relationship with you. Please send me the Holy Spirit to help me learn how to pray when I am afflicted. I ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of His Precious Blood.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, AMEN.
“Today, penetrate the spirit of my poverty and arrange everything in such a way that the most destitute will have no reason to envy you. I find pleasure, not in large buildings and magnificent structures, but in a pure and humble heart.”
Jesus to Saint Faustina (Diary of St. Faustina 532)
What is a Spirit of Poverty? How does this stop your suffering from obsession?
What does Jesus mean in that passage?
It is detachment from the things of this world. Jesus just wants your whole heart, complete trust in Him, so that He can transform you. He will give you the grace to stop suffering from obsession.
And raising His eyes toward his disciples He said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours."
Jesus in Luke 6:20
Those who are poor in spirit have a healthy detachment from the things of this world. Jesus just wants your whole heart, and complete trust in Him, so that He can transform you. It is through a right relationship with Jesus that your mind will be restored and you will stop suffering from obsession and needing help.
The Christian life is not to be summarized by what is permitted and what is forbidden. He is not asking you to give up your worldly wants to torment you.
Love isn’t love until you give it away.
He’s asking you to value Him above all else.
Jesus has the words of everlasting life. When you encounter Him, who is unlike any other, and you allow Him to possess your body (through Holy Communion of the Blessed Sacrament), your mind (through constant mental prayer with lectio divina), and your soul (through regular visits to confession) your life will be radically changed. When you make Christ your greatest good you are given a new path, one of abundant life.
What Does He Mean, Abundant Life?
Being a Christian is not about making an ethical choice or living according to a set of rules that define what is forbidden and allowed. It is the result of an encounter with a Person. That person is Jesus Christ and He gives you, through the Holy Spirit, a new horizon and a decisive direction for your life. Place all your cares upon Him, give up your selfish desires for His will through union with Him.
When you are in friendship with Christ you safeguard the Trinitarian communion which comes only through Him. This is what happens in the Mass. It is the place where Heaven and Earth meet. This is what you experience when you are in a state of grace and receiving the Holy Eucharist in the Mass. This is where the flame of love comes from. It is the fire of the Holy Spirit.
How Demonic Oppression Happens
Remember, demonic oppression happens when you fall into temptation from evil spirits. The demons know your weaknesses and they hate you. They cloud your judgement, and their aim is to keep you in bondage to your sinful nature. When you experience a demonic oppression, it can affect many things causing difficulties in your life.
You will feel weighed down spiritually, psychologically, and emotionally. It will affect your relationships with others, may even affect your finances. If you lack spiritual discipline, you will continue the vicious cycle you have found yourself in.
You will not be able to resist, and you will fall under the influence of the evil spirits wreaking havoc in your life to a degree you never thought possible.
Repent. I can’t stress this enough.
This was the one thing Jesus said to me with perfect clarity moments after receiving Him in Holy Communion. It was a very clear word of knowledge. You likely committed a sin or sins that left you vulnerable to demonic oppression and your lack of discipline in the faith and inability to repent have enslaved you to this evil spirit. When you allow yourself to be influenced by things that are contrary to the Will of God you can become spiritually oppressed. Holiness brings about a spiritual joy. Union with Christ causes the soul to have peace and joy even in great suffering.
Repent. If you let this oppression rule the day, over time it will become insidious and devastating. You can develop physical symptoms like insomnia, you will develop addictions (screen time, drugs, alcohol, porn, etc….) You may be diagnosed with an inexplicable illness, have suicidal thoughts, develop sexual perversions, and even self-mutilate.
If you are experiencing apathy toward God or if you even have an anger toward Him, then pray anyway. Pray constantly. Your spiritual deadness is not going to go away on its own. If you have turned toward a false religion, witchcraft, or have developed a lack of guilt for your evil deeds, repent. Your demonic obsessions will not go away on their own. They will cause an eruption of uncontrollable anger, mood swings, emotional outbursts, low self-esteem, a feeling of total despair, and a lack of purpose in life.
Why cling to all this baggage?
Why stay a slave to demons who wish you in hell?
This moment you must repent and change your life through the power of the Blood of Christ, who has already WON.
You must not only repent but change your habits. Do not frequent demonically infested places. This includes virtual spaces and real brick and mortar places. If a place makes you want to commit the sin, if the place makes you have the obsessive thoughts, then cut it out of your life. Period.
Stop being a tool of the devil. Evil spirits love to attack you in secret, subtle ways. The devil loves the darkness, and to attack from the shadows. Resist, and the devil will flee from you.
How do you Resist?
The arsenal that works:
- A valid confession.
- A disciplined prayer life.
- Daily reception of the Holy Eucharist (in a state of grace and worthily – 1 Cor. 11:27).
- Use of blessed sacramentals, Holy Water. These have stood the test of time for 2 millennia. Don’t knock it until you try it.
- Daily scripture reading for a minimum of 30 minutes (Lectio Divina).
- Immediately upon being presented with a temptation to sin, an obsessive thought, a trigger moment, pray. The easiest way to start is to ask your guardian angel to help you.
Sometimes demonic assaults will overwhelm your mind by inserting thoughts or obsessive images into your imagination and memory in rapid fire. You may feel you are unable to irradicate it. In a violent attack like this you may feel tormented by an obsessive thought that you know is not of your own mind and you may also know has to be false. Yet you cannot stop the train of thought. It is so heavily imprinted on your mind and such an attack on your emotions that you begin to accept it as your own.
Intense obsessions need intense prayer.
If you have strong and prolonged obsessions this may be a catalyst for you to develop serious spiritual warfare prayer habits. In God’s mercy He may be calling you to a higher level of holiness through deep prayer.
If you have severe attacks such as these, you need to confide in a priest who can help you make a general confession and advise you on good spiritual practices.
I cannot stress enough and have found this to be true in my own life, the Holy Rosary has the greatest power against diabolical obsessions. A soul in great torment of any kind will find the peace of Christ and will overcome sin when this prayer is prayed throughout the day. Try praying 3 or 4 rosaries a day to help with diabolical obsessions. Break it up throughout the day. Make sure when you pray them you find one with good meditations on each mystery so that you can focus on the life of Christ and the message of the Gospel. This spiritual practice has so many wonderful benefits.
Overcoming Obsessive Thoughts and Diabolical Oppression
Here are some final thoughts- stay close to Christ no matter what.
Ignore your moods, evil thoughts that enter your mind, bad situations that may cause you to despair and remain fixed on Christ. You can see through the lives of the saints how they stayed fixed on Christ when they were afflicted by the demonic.
He loves you. This I know beyond a shadow of a doubt.
If your oppression is so severe that you cannot in this moment love Him back, then make acts of love toward Him anyway.
Love is an act of the will.
When in doubt, look at the crucifix and ponder how anyone could subject themselves to such torment if they didn’t have a supernatural love for you.

Blessed be God forever as the above article made me understand my obsessions. My needs are such that I realize that praying the rosary more than one time is what I need to practice. God is calling me to be more prayerful, and not being lazy. I am confident that the 2023 year will be a great year re my understanding of the battles with demons and my own behavior. I was looking for someone to help me in understanding why my mind was so overwhelmed with thoughts of the past and causing me to sin. Thank you for writing this article. God bless. Your sister in JMJ, Teresa
Praise God! I will lift you in prayer. The Lord is wonderful and can heal us of anything that takes us away from His Most Sacred Heart. The rosary is most powerful. As we grow closer to Jesus and detach from the things that cause us to sin it frees us to love Him and trust Him more and more with our weaknesses and sinful habits. The sacrament of reconciliation is very powerful for freeing us from diabolic obsessions. I pray for my confessor before my confession and I do my penances twice, once for my sins and again for my confessor’s vocation. Thank you for posting. May God Bless you abundantly.
All the prayers and articles have been helpful. I suffer with religious OCD and it’s a beast. I’m not sure how ending up getting the email from this site but what a blessing!
When I am read this article, I need everyone help to pray for me, Hope God will forgive me to my desires of my flesh, i have habitual sexual sin which I offend thee and God..,Hope God help me to overcome this temptation of being sexually. IN JESUS NAME…
Ramil, I will pray for you. God will forgive you and He will give you the grace you need to overcome this obsession. I’ve added two more prayers for you: https://iamjesus.net/prayer-for-freedom-from-addictions/ . It is very important that you make a good confession and you remove any near occasion of sin, which means you avoid any situation that would cause you to desire the sin and to commit the sin. God gives us mercy and grace when we humble ourselves and confess our sins. You can overcome this, and even if you do find yourself sinning again, it is important to immediately confess it to a priest and make a new resolution to overcome it again. You must never have the sin of presumption about any vice. Always remain hopeful that God will help you overcome it. You must get rid of anything that causes you to desire the sin so that you can overcome it. May God bless you and give you both strength and courage.
I thank you Jesus, for leading me to this site. My feeble prayer was answered. Have been suffering from these obsessions and obsessive compulsive behaviour for years. I am learning so much from the Holy Scriptures. I found my cure. Thank you, thank you. May God continue to bless you in your work for His Kingdom.
Dominica, praise be to God! We give all the glory to God who is merciful and loves us so much. Thank you Jesus for answering Dominica’s prayers and giving her the grace to overcome obsessions. All glory and honor is yours. Amen!
I suffer from OCD of all different types. Oh Lord, I am so overwhelmed from everything I have just read. It is all so true. Everything is confirmed in my spirit. I am getting some professional help, but things are not breaking as fast as I was expecting. I pray every single day. I do not know what to do anymore. I am trying so hard. Lord help me. I truly need prayer. Thank you. Your article is absolutely enlightening. I get a lot of prayer points out of it.
Hi Melissa. Please know that I am praying for you. Be kind to yourself and trust in Jesus as you carry this cross. He will not bring you to it if he isn’t going to see you through it. I’m not sure if you have ever heard of Saint Oscar Romero. He was a Catholic priest (and later archbishop in El Salvador), who struggled with scrupulosity and was later diagnosed with OCD. He was assassinated in 1980 while serving Mass. During his lifetime he wrote a lot of books. He also sought psychotherapy for his OCD. He would be an amazing resource for you to discover while you are on your journey. He has so many books and writings that will inspire you. Sometimes God gives us friends in heaven as a cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) to cheer us on as we strive toward healing in this life on our road toward holiness. Be at peace and know that you are loved by God. Scrupulosity is a beast, and I have suffered from it too in the past. The Lord healed me of it after a lot of prayer. Be patient with yourself as you work with your therapist on your OCD. Saint Oscar Romero also had a therapist for OCD, too. God sees the whole tapestry of your life while you are hyper-focused on how to stitch the next thread. He’s holding you in his hands.
