Discover the 1899 Sacred Heart Consecration Prayer by Pope Leo XIII. Learn its history during the Industrial Revolution and its prophetic meaning for today.

In June, the month of the Sacred Heart, we revisit the profound Consecration Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Promulgated in 1899 by Pope Leo XIII to protect human dignity during the height of the Industrial Revolution, this devotion takes on a prophetic new meaning as we stand on the precipice of the Artificial Intelligence age under Pope Leo XIV.

The Echo of Leo: Pope Leo XIII vs. Pope Leo XIV

This historical parallel has never been more relevant than it is right now. On May 25, 2026, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV released his highly anticipated first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. Poignantly signed on the exact 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIV explicitly chose his papal name to honor Leo XIII’s legacy. While Leo XIII addressed the industrial revolution of steel and steam, Leo XIV has stepped forward as the moral shepherd for the Artificial Intelligence revolution. In Magnifica Humanitas, Leo XIV issues an impassioned plea to “disarm” unchecked technological races, warning that an algorithm can never replicate a human conscience or a heart capable of self-giving love. By praying the Consecration to the Sacred Heart today, we aren’t just reciting a 19th-century prayer; we are actively reclaiming our human dignity from the digital noise.

Pope Leo XIII’s love of the Sacred Heart Of Jesus

Pope Leo XIII was a towering moral figure at the close of the 19th century. Famously known for his landmark social encyclical Rerum Novarum, he bravely defended the dignity of the human worker against the cold, grinding machinery of the Industrial Revolution.

He understood that as technology and industry accelerated, humanity’s moral compass had to anchor itself deeper in the love of God. By dedicating the entire world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1899 through his encyclical Annum Sacrum, Leo XIII sought to remind a rapidly modernizing world that human beings are defined by their souls, not their output.

A daily consecration prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus should be an active part of our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. It can be a simple ejaculatory prayer every morning when you wake up. When we have a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus we are naturally drawn to His whole humanity, and His true presence in the Holy Eucharist. The more we are devoted to His Sacred Heart, the more progressively the Eucharist becomes the center of our lives.

There are also many formal prayers of consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and I’d like to introduce you to one in particular that Pope Leo XIII loved.

The History behind Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

On the 100th anniversary of this day, Pope Saint  John Paul II said: Pope Leo wished to “obtain ‘extraordinary benefits first for Christianity, but also for the whole human race’ (Annum sacrum). Asking that … all people should be consecrated, he gave a new direction and sense to the consecration which had already been practiced for two centuries by individuals, groups, Dioceses and nations.”

“I could never separate the devotion to the Heart of Jesus to the devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and I never was able to explain how much the Sacred Heart of Jesus deigned to favor me in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament has always been like heaven to me.” -Blessed Mary of the Divine Heart

Consecration Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

by Blessed Mary of the Divine Heart (1863-1899)

My most loving Jesus, I consecrate myself today anew and without reserve to Your divine Heart. I consecrate to You my body with all its senses, my soul with all its faculties: my whole being. I consecrate to You all my thoughts, words and actions; all my sufferings and labors; all my hopes, consolations and joys; and, above all, I consecrate to You my poor heart, that it may love only You and be consumed as a victim in the fire of Your love. Accept, O Jesus, my most loving spouse, the desire that I have to console Your divine Heart and to be Yours for ever. Possess me in such a manner that henceforward I may have no other liberty than that of loving You, no other life than that of suffering and dying for You.

I place in You unlimited trust and I hope, from Your infinite mercy, for the pardon of my sins. I place in Your hands all my cares, especially that of my eternal salvation. I promise to love and honor You to the last moment of my life, and to propagate, with the help of Your divine grace and as far as I am able, devotion to Your Sacred Heart. Dispose of me, O divine Heart of Jesus, according to Your pleasure; I desire no other recompense than Your greater glory and Your holy love.

Grant me the grace to find my dwelling place in Your Sacred Heart where I desire to pass every day of my life and where I wish to breathe my last breath. Make my heart Your abode, the place of Your repose, so that we may remain intimately united until, finally, I may praise, love, and possess You for all eternity, singing for ever the infinite mercy of Your Sacred Heart.

Amen.
