Guarding Their Soul: A Guide to Bedside Prayer for the Dying
When a loved one stands at the threshold of eternity, the atmosphere in the room shifts into a sacred battleground. As caregivers, our ultimate privilege is to stand in the breach—covering them in divine mercy, invoking the protection of St. Joseph, and filling the silence with the living power of Scripture. Whether they are fully conscious or completely unresponsive, their soul can hear you. This guide is a step-by-step spiritual rescue mission to help you usher them safely into the arms of Christ.
In Catholic tradition, a “happy death” (or holy death) does not mean a death free from physical suffering, but rather a soul departing this world in a state of grace, perfectly reconciled with God and sustained by the sacraments.
The ultimate definition comes directly from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which encourages believers to prepare for their final hour by trusting in God’s mercy and asking the saints—particularly St. Joseph—to shield them:
“The Church encourages us to prepare ourselves for the hour of our death. In the Litany of the Saints, for instance, she prays: ‘From a sudden and unprovided death, deliver us, O Lord’; to ask the Mother of God to intercede for us ‘at the hour of our death’ in the Hail Mary; and to entrust ourselves to St. Joseph, the patron of a happy death.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1014
Essentially, a happy death is one where a soul enters eternity wrapped in the peace of Christ, fortified by the Last Rites, and securely guarded against the final temptations of despair. Prayer for the dying is vital, because “each person receives his eternal retribution in his immortal soul at the very moment of his death, in a particular judgment that refers his life to Christ.” (CCC 1022).
You can pray with your loved one in his or her final moments even if he or she is not conscious. Have the faith to believe they can hear you and can pray with you.
Our loved ones need our spiritual assistance to help them overcome the final attacks of the devil and to prepare their souls for true repentance and reconciliation with God. Do everything in your power to help them receive their Last Rites and if this is not possible, pray in hope for the mercy of God and for final perseverance.
Last Rites are crucial for faithful Catholics because these are the final prayers and blessings your dying loved one will receive before final judgement and the afterlife. The administration of the Last Rites, only available for Catholic Chrisitians, is a final cleansing. The Last Rites will prepare your dying loved one to enter heaven rather than hell. The Last Rites give by the priest will offer the dying soul a final confession and absolution of sins, and will also offer a blessing through the anointing of oil, and finally, will offer final holy Communion (called Viaticum), which literally means “with you on the way.”
Be vigilant and pray fervently during your loved one’s final moments. Pray without ceasing and call upon the angels and saints to guide you. St. Faustina has a beautiful passage from her Diary that focuses entirely on hope, mercy, and the guarantee of salvation for a trusting soul who has made peace with God:
“I found myself in a strange cottage where an elderly man was dying amidst great torments. All about the bed was a multitude of demons and the family, who were crying. When I began to pray, the spirits of darkness fled, with hissing and threats directed at me. The soul became calm and, filled with trust, rested in the Lord.” Diary of St. Faustina, Paragraph 1798.
Turning with Confidence to Infinite Love
Before diving into prayer, take a gentle, unhurried moment to speak to your loved one’s heart. Remind them that they do not need to carry the weight of regret, fear, or past failings another second. God’s mercy is not a cold courtroom; it is the open arms of a loving Father waiting to welcome his tired child home.
Whisper these words of reassurance to them: “Jesus is right here. He looks at you with absolute tenderness, not judgment. Let go of everything else, breathe in His peace, and let Him love you.”
Now, let us turn with total confidence to the Lord and ask His forgiveness.
Prayer of Reconciliation
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
AMEN.
A Heartfelt Surrender to Mercy
An Act of Contrition is a soul’s beautiful love letter back to God—a declaration that we are sorry simply because we love Him. If your loved one cannot speak, pray these words slowly on their behalf, allowing each phrase to wash over their spirit like a healing balm. You can ask them to speak to God from their heart about regrets, ways they have fallen short, and times they have sinned against God or others. Take as much time as needed with your loved one to recollect and to pray from the heart.
Act of Contrition
O my God,
I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee,
and I detest all my sins,
because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell;
but most of all because they offend Thee, my God,
Who are all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace,
to confess my sins, to do penance,
and to amend my life.
AMEN.
Prayer for the Dying is Powerful
Another very powerful prayer for the dying is the Divine Mercy Chaplet. You can pray this prayer with or without the beads. The prayers are listed below for this prayer for the dying.
St. Faustina Kowalska, whom Jesus gave many mystical experiences in addition to the devotion to the Divine Mercy, writes about the importance of prayer for the dying.
She says, “Pray as much as you can for the dying. By your entreaties, obtain for them trust in My mercy, because they have most need of trust, and have it the least. Be assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in their final moment depends on your prayer. You know the whole abyss of My mercy, so draw upon it for yourself and especially for poor sinners. Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul” (Diary, 1777).
The Divine Mercy Chaplet
St. Faustina’s Prayer for Sinners
O Jesus, eternal Truth, our Life, I call upon You and I beg Your mercy for poor sinners. O sweetest Heart of my Lord, full of pity and unfathomable mercy, I plead with You for poor sinners. O Most Sacred Heart, Fount of Mercy from which gush forth rays of inconceivable graces upon the entire human race, I beg of You light for poor sinners. O Jesus, be mindful of Your own bitter Passion and do not permit the loss of souls redeemed at so dear a price of Your most precious Blood. O Jesus, when I consider the great price of Your Blood, I rejoice at its immensity, for one drop alone would have been enough for the salvation of all sinners. Although sin is an abyss of wickedness and ingratitude, the price paid for us can never be equalled. Therefore, let every soul trust in the Passion of the Lord, and place its hope in His mercy. God will not deny His mercy to anyone. Heaven and earth may change, but God’s mercy will never be exhausted. Oh, what immense joy burns in my heart when I contemplate Your incomprehensible goodness, O Jesus! I desire to bring all sinners to Your feet that they may glorify Your mercy throughout endless ages (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, 72).
Make the Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening Prayer
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!
Our Father
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen.
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Closing Prayer
O Greatly Merciful God, Infinite Goodness, today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to Your mercy — to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out. Gracious God, do not reject the prayer of this earth’s exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding, Who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to You, we implore You: anticipate us with Your grace and keep on increasing Your mercy in us, that we may faithfully do Your holy will all through our life and at death’s hour. Let the omnipotence of Your mercy shield us from the darts of our salvation’s enemies, that we may with confidence, as Your children, await Your [Son’s] final coming — that day known to You alone. And we expect to obtain everything promised us by Jesus in spite of all our wretchedness. For Jesus is our Hope: through His merciful Heart, as through an open gate, we pass through to Heaven [Diary, 1570].

St. Joseph: Patron Saint of a Happy Death
Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is universally recognized as the patron saint of the dying. Church tradition holds that Joseph passed away peacefully in the very arms of Jesus and Mary. Because he experienced the ultimate “happy death”—surrounded by the ultimate love and divine comfort—he is the perfect intercessor for our loved ones in their final moments.
Why Pray for St. Joseph’s Intercession?
Asking for Saint Joseph’s intercession provides a profound spiritual shield for a soul transitioning into eternity. St. Joseph’s presence scatters the forces of darkness that try to bring despair to a soul in its final agony. By calling upon St. Joseph’s intercession, you invite the same gentle protection he gave Jesus and Mary into your loved one’s room.
The Power of His Intercession for a Dying Soul:
Spiritual Protection: Known as the Terror of Demons, Saint Joseph fiercely protects vulnerable, dying souls from final spiritual attacks and temptations to despair.
Peace and Trust: He intercedes to grant the dying person final repentance, deep peace, and complete trust in God’s mercy.
A Guide to Eternity: Just as he guided and protected Jesus on earth, he stands ready to guide your loved one safely into the afterlife.
St. Joseph, Terror of Demons, Pray for Us!
Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons,
Cast thy solemn gaze upon the devil and all his minions and protect us with thy mighty staff. Thou fled through the night to avoid the devil’s wicked designs; now with the power of God, smite the demons as they flee from thee! Grant special protection, we pray, for children, fathers, mothers, families, and the dying. By God’s grace, no demon dares approach while thou art near, so we beg of thee, St. Joseph, always be near to us! Saint Joseph, the terror of demons, pray for us.
AMEN.
The Ultimate Comfort: Ushering Them Home with the Word of God
When words fail and life begins to fade away from your loved one, the Holy Scriptures are an unbreakable bridge of peace between this life and the next. Even in a state of unconsciousness, a dying soul can hear and feel the living Word of God. By reading these sacred texts aloud, you are not just reciting words—you are wrapping your loved one in a divine embrace, calming their fears, and ushering them into eternity on the wings of God’s promises.
John 11:25-26: The Resurrection and the Life
Christ’s direct words to Martha before raising Lazarus. It serves as a triumphant declaration of hope for a soul transitioning into eternity.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Whisper this prayer: “Lord Jesus, You are the Resurrection and the Life.
Grant [Name] final perseverance and eternal joy.”
John 14:1-4: The Promise of the Father’s House
Christ’s own reassuring pledge that a beautiful, custom-prepared home awaits them.
Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith also in me.
In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.
If there were not, would I have told you
that I am going to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come back again and take you to myself,
so that where I am you also may be.”
Whisper this prayer: “Jesus, open wide the gates of Your Father’s house,
and let Your loving mercy envelop [Name] right now.”
Psalm 23: The Shepherd’s Ultimate Escort
A timeless prayer of absolute trust, guiding the soul through the final valley into eternal rest.
The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. In green pastures he makes me lie down; to still waters he leads me; he restores my soul. He guides me along right paths for the sake of his name. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. You set a table before me in front of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me all the days of my life; I will dwell in the house of the LORD for endless days.
Whisper this prayer: “Jesus, thank you for guiding and comforting [Name] into eternal life.
Jesus, I trust in You!”
Romans 8:38-39 — The Invincible Love of Christ
This is arguably the most powerful passage in the New Testament regarding Christ’s love. It boldly proclaims that not even death can separate us from Him.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Whisper this prayer: “O Love that never lets go, hold [Name] tightly in these final moments.
Jesus, I trust in You!”
Revelation 21:4: The Wiping Away of Every Tear
This passage provides immense emotional relief by painting a picture of the pure peace of heaven that awaits souls who are dying.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.
Whisper this prayer: “O Jesus, wipe every tear from [Name’s] eyes
and grant him/her eternal rest.”
Psalm 116:15 — How God Views Death of His Children
A incredibly brief but deeply comforting verse from the Old Testament that reminds the family how precious their loved one is to God.
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful ones.
Whisper this prayer: “Holy Spirit, Our Advocate, fill us with your loving presence. AMEN.
