When our souls feel weighed down by our own weaknesses or the spiritual state of our family, turning directly to Christ in prayer can bring immediate peace. The “Dear Jesus” prayer serves as a heartfelt sanctuary for anyone seeking a sincere prayer of repentance after sinning against God, or looking to intercede for those who have lost their way.
What is the "Dear Jesus" Prayer of Repentance?
The “Dear Jesus” prayer is a powerful Catholic cry for mercy, providing a structured way to offer a sincere prayer of repentance after sinning against God. In moments where our hearts feel heavily burdened by our own weaknesses or the spiritual state of our family, turning to a dedicated prayer can help re-anchor our soul in Christ’s mercy.
A Powerful Prayer of Reparation for Loved Ones
Beyond personal conversion, this prayer doubles as an intentional act of reparation for loved ones who have walked away from the faith. By offering these words, we actively plead for God to soften hard hearts, console the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and grant the grace of reversion to all sinners currently living away from God.
“Dear Jesus” is a humble prayer of repentance and love, much like the Psalm 51 repentance prayer. To grow in humility and love for God, we should reflect on the ways we have offended Him by our actions, however seemingly insignificant they may be.
Fear of offending God is a virtue, and it comes from having humility and contrition for the sin we commit. I provides us a healthy view on how our actions might be perceived by others. It also helps us form a Eucharistic mindset. When we can put on the mind of Christ, we see the world with humility and charity. Without fear of offending God, we make decisions based on selfish wants and needs, and it stems from our pride and not charity.
The Dear Jesus prayer seeks mercy for hard-hearted loved ones who are not repentant. We plead for God to have mercy on their souls and soften their hearts. “Dear Jesus” also asks the Lord to give us the grace to grow in holiness and to be able to ‘see’ with the light of the Holy Spirit our sinful habits and attitudes that need conversion.
Dear Jesus, Forgive Me of My Sins
Dear Jesus, forgive me for my sins.
I’m sorry for the world that doesn’t love You.
It hurts me when people ridicule You, joke about You, persecute You.
When they ignore You.
Avoid You.
Blame You.
Refuse to do Your will.
They don’t know You.
Have Mercy on them.
Dear Jesus, it pains me to know another soul is willfully wounding Your most Sacred Heart. If only they knew the beauty of knowing You, and following You, and hearing Your voice calling out to them from the darkness– I want to believe they would come. But not everyone who hears the call has the will to follow. Some cannot bear to lose their lives. Please have mercy on those that are afraid to follow Your will. Bless them, have mercy on them. Give them the grace they need to find eternal life in You.
But me.
When I show contempt for Your will, when I refuse to obey Your most holy will for me. When I refuse to pray, to seek Your face, to repent of my sins, to reconcile, it is a transgression much deeper, more fully crueler and completely reproachable.
I deserve Your just justice when I fall away from You and choose to no longer be in spirit with You.
Because the world knows You not.
But I know You deeply.
I have witnessed the sound of Your voice,
The pains of Your Sacred Heart,
The joy of receiving Your forgiveness for my heinous sins,
and the peace that comes when I surrender to You.
Why then must I continually reject the grace You give me?
Why must I constantly offend You with my perverse obstinacy?
Forgive me.
I am a wretch.
Dear Jesus, I do not deserve Your love and forgiveness, yet You give it to me every time I confess and repent.
God of my heart I beg You to dominate my heart and make it like Thine.
Show me mercy and take this perverse obstinency from me. Heal me of the scourge of pride, the destructive nature of perverse anger, the sin of a wicked tongue and help me obtain the virtues needed to remain Your obedient son and heir to eternal life.
Dear Jesus, I cannot bear eternity without You. In Your mercy please grant me the grace to surrender my evil ways and become a disciple willing to follow Your path.
