Healing Prayer for Parents of a Sick Child. When you have a child who falls ill and you are filled with anxiety over what to do, you need to pray with faith and trust in the goodness of God to help you discern how to care for your child in the best way. This healing prayer for parents of a sick child will guide you in how to make a prayer from your heart for your child during this time of uncertainty. You will begin with an act of faith in Jesus to hear your prayer, followed by a scripture passage, and then you will pray a petition for God to heal your child, and finally, you will pray in thanksgiving and gratitude for the grace God gives you.

Trust and Believe…

Lord,

I know you love me intimately. Please help me prepare my heart as I begin these 15 minutes of mental prayer with you. Lord, let me be present to you and aware of the movements of the Holy Spirit in my heart, receiving the grace you give with gratitude and trust. Lord, help me visualize you in my presence right now as I strive to pray this healing prayer for parents of a sick child. Let me fully contemplate the readings as I ponder Jesus heals a man’s son. I want to pray with faith while being open to the movements of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

Make a Movie in Your Mind:

Next we will travel to Galilee to meet up with Jesus as he ministers to the people in Capernaum, a small fishing village by the sea with a small population of fishing and farming families, who owned houses along the shore made of blackened volcanic basalt stones. This is a very fertile land with vineyards and orchards growing grapes, figs, olives, and pomegranates. Farmers would grow wheat, barley, and date palms, and the area had sycamore, fig, and cypress trees. I want you to imagine being in this place for a moment on a warm sunny day. You see Jesus in the distance, and you are watching a royal official approach him with a large entourage of servants.

Open your heart to the Holy Spirit as you begin reading this passage about faith in healing and the mercy of God.

Healing Prayer for Parents

Jesus Heals a Man's Son

John 4:46-53

Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death.

Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.”

The royal official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

Jesus said to him, “You may go; your son will live.”

The man believed what Jesus said to him and left. While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live.

He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, “The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon.”

The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he and his whole household came to believe.

Be Completely Real…

Now we will personalize this passage from Capernaum. I want you to take a few moments to speak to Jesus from your heart about your situation with your child. Tell him what is going on, how you feel, how your child is suffering. Be raw and honest.

Now we will contemplate a passage from the Catechism on illness and suffering. Let’s begin by asking the Holy Spirit to speak to our hearts as we read these words and contemplate our current situation. Let us thank and praise God for his goodness and his mercy as we read these words:

Illness and suffering have always been among the gravest problems confronted in human life. In illness, man experiences his powerlessness, his limitations, and his finitude. Every illness can make us glimpse death.

Illness can lead to anguish, self-absorption, sometimes even despair and revolt against God. It can also make a person more mature, helping him discern in his life what is not essential so that he can turn toward that which is. Very often illness provokes a search for God and a return to him.

Now that you have prayed for faith, opened your heart to receive grace, meditated on scripture, and contemplated illness and suffering from the perspective of God’s loving mercy, it’s time to begin a prayer of petition for your child’s healing. Call on the Holy Spirit to guide your heart and mind as you begin this prayer, then make your petition from your heart.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit for Grace

Start with Love…

Holy Spirit,

I know you are truly present to me in this moment. I desire to be present to you. Help me to pray from my heart with love and gratitude.

Thank you, Holy Spirit, for every consolation, desolation, time of silence, difficult trial, and temptation of the evil one. I understand that you love me and that everything in my life happens by God’s holy will, whether it be divine providence or God’s permissive will due to my sin and negligence.

Please help me pray my petition to God for the healing of my sick child with faith, hope, and love.

AMEN.

Give us wisdom as his/her parents to understand the nature of his/her illness and natural remedies.  Please bless his/her doctors with special wisdom to treat him/her. We ask for special grace to recognize the workings of the Holy Spirit.

We thank you and praise you for every blessing in our family, every trial we’ve been given, for accompanying us in this time of suffering and for leading us to your holy will.

We ask all this in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN.

Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Are You Listening?

Take a few moments to just be with the Lord in silence now. Try to look at an image of him, or a crucifix, and just be with him in complete silence. If you’ve never done this before, just close your eyes and place your hand on your heart. Imagine Jesus standing before you in glory and he is looking at you with a loving gaze. See him touch your hand over your heart with his extended hand. Notice the scar where he was pierced with the nail. As you imagine him touching your heart I want you to feel the warmth in your heart expanding. Open your heart as wide as you can and give as much love as you can feel back to Jesus. Now spend a few moments taking him in and being open to the movements of the Holy Spirit. Let him fill your heart with peace. If the Lord puts a thought into your mind, dialogue with him. If you are met with a silent loving gaze, keep your gaze and let your heart be filled to the brim.

Now say, “Jesus, I trust in you.”
