Lent is a special time of prayer that lasts for 40 days and includes both fasting and almsgiving. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and it concludes when the sun goes down on Holy Thursday. In scripture we see that immediately after baptism, Jesus went into the desert to pray and fast for 40 days before the beginning of His earthly ministry. During Lent we recognize that we are baptized into Christ’s death, and we must die with Him to began new life in Him. Lent is a time of repentance, prayer, and reflection. The goal is to increase in personal holiness, grow closer to Jesus and to recommit our lives to Him, shedding bad habits and vices. Christians are asked to fast from things that they have an earthly attachment to, giving that time to God in worship and recollection instead. We abstain from luxuries during Lent, but we also labor to know and love God better in our personal lives by being more faithful to Christ. Most Lenten prayers are prayers of reflection on the passion and death of Jesus and on our own need for repentance and renewal.
