The Confiteor prayer after confession is the prayer made by the faithful after confessing to the priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is a traditional prayers following confession.
About the Confiteor Prayer after Confession
Jesus knows and understands the wounds of sin. In John 20:22-23 He gives authority to the Church to forgive sins so that humans who are wounded by evil can heal, amend their lives, and begin again on the road to divine life in Christ.
The Bible commands us to confess our sins. This is a great exercise in the virtue of humility. It is very difficult to admit out loud the deepest most shameful things we have thought, said, or done.
But I will tell you, as someone who has been ministered to in the confessional, aside from the gift of the Eucharist, it is the single most beautiful and beneficial sacrament of the Church to give sinners the grace of conversion of heart. It just simply works.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity.
1 John 1: 8-9
The church is a field hospital. The sacrament of penance, or reconciliation, is available to anyone who wants to renew his life, and begin again in Christ. When we come before Jesus in this sacrament it is the priest who forgives us of the sin but it is the grace of reconciling with God that gives us the ability to overcome future temptations and grow in holiness.
There is Nothing Like a Good Confession
If you haven’t been to confession in a long time and you are in a rut in your spiritual life, or maybe away from the Church, you’ll need to make a general confession. Begin by praying for the grace of the Holy Spirit to know your sins and then use a confession guide like this one to help you reflect on the sins you have committed in your life.
It is also a really good and charitable practice to pray for your confessor before you come to confession, to ask the Holy Spirit to guide him in regarding your confession so that you make a good valid one. I also always pray an extra penance for my confessor’s vocation after I have prayed the prayer after confession (the Confiteor).
After Your Confession, you are FORGIVEN
Do not dwell on the sins of your past after you’ve made a valid confession. Make a firm resolution to amend your life and avoid the near occasions of sin, and with the grace of God you will overcome it. Sometimes we sin again. If this happens to you, go back to confession as soon as possible. You have to fight your temptations to sin against God. It’s a battle, but with faith in God, love for Him and His Church, and a firm hope in your final perseverance, you WILL overcome habitual sin.
God loves you. This is why He has given you the Sacrament of Reconciliation and priests to minister to you in this life. Thank you Jesus!
When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.
John 20: 22-23
The Confiteor Prayer after Confession
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.
AMEN.
