Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle

Pray this prayer to St. Peter the Apostle, the first Pope, who Jesus raised to high authority even though he denied Him three times on Good Friday.

Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle asks for his intercession because as the first Pope, he is a mentor for men who have been given a priestly vocation. Peter was given primacy in the Church by Christ, Himself. For this reason, St. Peter goes before us all and is an advocate for us in our desire to fulfill our own vocations, no matter what. He should be venerated by all the faithful as he was by 1st century Christians [Acts 5:12-16].

Why do we offer Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle?

St. Peter the Apostle was far from being a perfect man. We know that on the night of the crucifixion he not only abandoned Jesus but denied knowing him 3 times. There are many stories in the New Testament where we are shown his failures both in word and in deed. But he was chosen by Christ for a special purpose, and given a supremacy in the Church because God knew his heart, and knew that he would obey the Divine Will for his life and serve. Jesus shows us this in a famous scene in John, where He saw in him the final moments of his life and knew how his journey would end (John 21:15-19).

In Matthew 16:18-19 Jesus gives Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and this is a reference to the role of the Al Habayit, also known as the royal vizier or Master of the Palace. It was a specific role and responsibility that gave Peter primacy. We read about the Al Habayit in the book of Isaiah, in which the King says, “I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.”

The Al Habayit was the highest-ranking official in the royal court of ancient Israel, akin to a modern day prime minister. The Al Habayit managed the affairs of the kingdom and spoke for the King. The Catholic Church is apostolic because it is lead by the successors of St. Peter the Apostle in an unbroken line of succession.

Reverence for St. Peter the Apostle in the Book of Acts

St. Peter the Apostle’s intercession is powerful. He is venerated by the faithful and is the patron saint of popes. We understand how even in the first century people had reverence for St. Peter the Apostle when we read Acts 3:1-10.

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple area for the three o’clock hour of prayer. And a man crippled from birth was carried and placed at the gate of the temple called “the Beautiful Gate” every day to beg for alms from the people who entered the temple.

When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. But Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.”

He paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them.

Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold, but what I do have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean, rise and walk.” Then Peter took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles grew strong. He leaped up, stood, and walked around, and went into the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God.

When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the one who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with amazement and astonishment at what had happened to him.

Let us meditate on St. Peter the Apostle as the Al Habayit, the one who holds the Keys to the Kingdom of God as the first Pope of the Catholic Church as we read from Matthew 16.

Jesus Gives St. Peter the Keys

The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 16:13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle:
O Holy Apostle

You are the Rock upon which Almighty God has built His Church. Obtain for me I pray you: lively faith, firm hope, and burning love, complete detachment from myself, contempt of the world, patience in adversity, humility in prosperity, recollection in prayer, purity of heart, a right intention in all my works, diligence in fulfilling the duties of my state of life, constancy in my resolutions, resignation to the will of God and perseverance in the grace of God even unto death; that so, by means of your intercession and your glorious merits, I may be made worthy to appear before the Chief and Eternal Shepherd of Souls, Jesus Christ, Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns forever.

Amen.

Prayer to St. Peter the Apostle: O Glorious St Peter

O Glorious Saint Peter,
who, in return for thy strong and generous faith,
thy profound and sincere humility,
and thy burning love,
was rewarded by Jesus Christ with singular privileges,
and, in particular, with the leadership of the other Apostles
and the primacy of the whole Church,
of which you were made the foundation stone,
obtain for us the grace of a lively faith,
that shall not fear to profess itself openly,
in its entirety and in all of its manifestations,
even to the shedding of blood, if occasion should demand it,
and to sacrifice of life itself rather than surrender.
Obtain for us likewise, a sincere loyalty to our holy mother, the Church;
grant that we may ever remain most closely
and sincerely united to the Roman Pontiff,
who is the heir of thy faith and of thy authority,
the one, true, visible Head of the Catholic Church.
Grant, moreover, that we may follow,
in all humility and meekness,
her teaching and her advice,
and may be obedient to all her precepts,
in order to be able here on earth to enjoy
a peace that is sure and undisturbed,
and to attain one day in heaven to everlasting happiness. Amen.

℣. Pray for us, Saint Peter the Apostle,
℟. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray: O God,
who has given unto Thy blessed Apostle Peter
the keys to the kingdom of heaven,
and the power to bind and loose:
grant that we may be delivered,
through the help of this intercession,
from the slavery of all our sins:
Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen.

Thank you for joining with us in prayer to St. Peter the Apostle.

  2. Dear God, I come to You with a heavy heart, wounded by those closest to me. I carry deep pain, rejection, and anger. I no longer want to live in hatred or pass on this hurt to others. Wash me clean, Lord. Heal my heart, renew my mind, and fill me with Your peace. Help me forgive, even when it’s hard. Replace bitterness with love, sorrow with hope. Let Your love be my anchor and strength. Restore what was broken and lead me to freedom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

    1. I lift you in prayer. Your words to the Lord are beautiful and from your heart. When I read it I immediately remembered a verse from Revelation 21. “Behold I make all things new.” REVELATION 21:1-8 “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them [as their God]. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, [for] the old order has passed away.” The one who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then he said, “Write these words down, for they are trustworthy and true.” He said to me, “They are accomplished. I [am] the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give a gift from the spring of life-giving water. The victor will inherit these gifts, and I shall be his God, and he will be my son. But as for cowards, the unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

  3. Heavenly Father, I come before You with a humble heart, trusting in Your mercy and unfailing love. Like the Canaanite woman, I refuse to give up, even when answers seem delayed. Like the persistent widow, I will continue to cry out to You for justice and a breakthrough. Lord, look upon my many applications and hear my prayers. Where my qualifications seem small, let Your favor speak loudly. Where my efforts feel unnoticed, let Your grace open doors that no one can shut. Speak for me in places I cannot reach. Touch the hearts of employers and decision-makers on my behalf. Strengthen me when I grow weary and renew my hope each day. Teach me patience as I wait for Your perfect timing. Let my season of waiting turn into a testimony of victory and provision. I trust You completely, Lord. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen. Today, Lord, I wait for your answer in Jesus name, Amen

  4. Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your love, mercy, and faithfulness in my life. With humble trust, I come before You, seeking Your grace and favor for employment. Through the intercession of Blessed Mary, St. Joseph, St. Peter, St. Paul, St. John, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Abraham, St. Moses, St. David, and St. Stephen, present my needs before Your throne. Strengthen my faith, renew my hope, and open doors no one can shut. May Your perfect will be done in my life. Grant me a stable and fulfilling job according to Your purpose. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. I pray for my son, Paul, and Patricia to pass their exam and receive excellent results coming out soon. Amen
