The Virgin Mary is the Mother of all the peoples. While on the cross Jesus gave her to John, his disciple as his mother. Catholics believe by giving her as mother to John, she became mother of us all, a Mother of the Church. Catholics honor her just as Jesus did by venerating her. Just as we find ourselves asking others to pray for us when we feel we need help from God, Catholics believe that we can call upon the saints to pray for us as the ‘cloud of witnesses.’ They intercede for us in this life to help us grow in holiness and do the holy will of God.

Mary is the theotokos. It’s Greek for ‘the one who gave birth to God.’ This gives her a level of veneration that is higher than all other saints. She is the new ‘ark of the covenant’ and the new ‘holy of holies.’ To have this honor she had to be a pure vessel, full of grace. Mary was the very first Christian who, when the angel Gabriel came to her, said yes to the divine call to bear the Christ child for the salvation of the world. She knew through the prophets that both she and Jesus would suffer. She willingly said yes to God in stark contrast to the first woman, Eve, who disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden.

Devotion to Mary is a partnership. It begins with consecrating yourself to her and promising to pray a daily rosary and devote your life to the service of God. If you do these things, she will lead you to Jesus in a beautiful way.
