I will Obey Your Word, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I will teach others to follow you and I will bless your holy name.

I will obey your word, Jesus, and teach others to follow you. If you are new to mental prayer, we invite you to visit our page on the ways of mental prayer, Don’t know how to pray to God, to learn more.

We begin Day 18 of our Lenten Challenge with this opening prayer:

TRUST AND BELIEVE...

My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

Thank you, Jesus, for directing my path with your divine mercy and infinite love. Thank you for teaching me to choose right and to hate evil through your Church and your holy Word. Thank you Lord, for saving me from my sinful nature through the Sacraments and for giving me the grace to convert my heart and follow you.

Please give me the grace necessary to evangelize others. I want to teach others to follow you. The Bible says that when we obey your word we will be blessed.  Lord, let me teach others to follow you and bless your holy Name. I want to love and serve you and your Church.

I love you Jesus.

AMEN.

A Reflection for Prayerful Meditation

Join me in a prayerful meditation for your Lenten journey to follow Jesus and lead others.

I will Obey Your Word, Teach Others to Follow You

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit,

I believe you are truly here and present to me right now. I desire to be present to you. Please teach me how to know and obey your Word. I want to serve you, too. Please also give me the grace to teach others how to follow you.

Holy Spirit, please give me the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding so that I can teach others to follow you. Lord, I want to obey your Word, draw others to you, and love you from my whole heart.

Lord, please use me as you desire, strengthen my weaknesses and help me to obey your inspirations as I teach others to follow you.

Holy Spirit, I want to worship you with a pure heart and without distraction. Help me to separate myself from all worldly attachments and spend these 15 minutes meditating on your Word with my mind completely fixated on you.

You know all my weaknesses and that I can’t elevate my heart or my mind without your help. Please give me the grace right now to pray my mental prayer well and to love you in a way that is pleasing to you.  I want to grow to love you more perfectly.

Thank you, Lord, for every consolation, desolation, time of silence, difficult trial, and temptation of the evil one. I understand that everything that happens in my life is by your holy will, whether it be your divine providence or your permissive will due to my sin and negligence.

Please humble me as I walk with you toward Jerusalem. Help me obey your Word and teach others to follow you.

AMEN.

Say Nothing Just Take Him In

Spend 1-3 minutes in silence gazing at the Lord with love and gratitude, in a prayer of silent contemplation.

Make a Movie in Your Mind...

Now we will contemplate the first reading. Slowly imagine this scene in your mind as you read. Take your time. Pause over a moment that really tugs at your heart. Reread the passage again, this time imagine yourself physically there in the scene. What do you hear? See? Feel? Sense?

The Mercy of God

Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9

Moses spoke to the people and said:

“Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees which I am teaching you to observe, that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. Therefore, I teach you the statutes and decrees as the LORD, my God, has commanded me, that you may observe them in the land you are entering to occupy.

Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, ‘This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.’

For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him?

Or what great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this whole law which I am setting before you today?

However, take care and be earnestly on your guard not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live, but teach them to your children and to your children’s children.”

Reflection:

Let us take a moment to reflect on the message in the first reading.

We are listening to Moses lecture the next generation of Israelites after 40 years wandering in the desert. Their parents’ generation failed to follow the LORD and they were punished by God as a result.

What part of this excerpt from Deuteronomy sticks out to you?

“take care and be earnestly on your guard not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live, but teach them to your children and to your children’s children.”

Consider for a moment all that the Israelites witnessed, and all that they suffered for not having kept their covenant with God, who is faithful.

Now let’s personalize this passage from our first reading…

Think for a moment about your own nation, community, or family. Has the generation before you earnestly remembered what their eyes have seen and passed it on to their children and children’s children?

Do you want to say something to the Lord about this? Take time and listen for the Holy Spirit to respond to you.

Let’s Pray:

Jesus, I love you and I recognize the many ways our nation, our community, and our family has not remained earnest in our commitment to our faith and the Church. Lord, please give us the grace to remember what you have done and to pass it on to our children and our children’s children. AMEN.

Be Completely Real...

Ask the Lord:  “How can I pass on the faith?  What do you want me to do?”

Take a few moments to sit in silence with the Holy Spirit. When an idea comes to mind of a person or a place, continue dialoguing with the Lord about it.

You may want to journal your questions and the responses and continue praying on it in the coming days, weeks, and months.

Now we will contemplate the Lord by listening to him speak to us in the Gospels.

Visualize Christ

We return to the Sermon on the Mount, to the perfect space created for such an event with a huge crowd. The grassy hillside on Mount Eremos makes a natural amphitheater to project the words of Our Lord to the many who are here to listen.

We see Jesus sitting down on a spot elevated from the crowd. He has gained in popularity since the beginning of his ministry two years ago. It is a mild autumn day, and the sun is shining. The crowd is attentively listening….

To Be Called Greatest in the Kingdom

Matthew 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.

Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.

Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Reflection:

Let us meditate on what Jesus means when he says, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”

Let us pray in dialogue with the Lord:

Ask the Lord, “Jesus, how can I fulfill all that you are asking of me?”

Now we have just read what Jesus says in Matthew 5: “the mere letter of the law, down to the smallest letter” is not how I fulfill what He is asking of me in the New Covenant.

Speak from your heart again as you wrestle with this passage. Maybe say, “Jesus, I understand you don’t want me to abolish the law of Moses, but instead go further. How do I go further?”

Wait a bit. Has an idea come into mind? Are you envisioning something? Write it down. You may want to pray more about this in the coming days and weeks.

Now listen to the second part of Jesus’ teaching, “Whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

Perhaps you’ve heard something like this thought… “Jesus, I believe you are saying that by obeying God we prove we love God. And so by teaching and serving our neighbors according to the law, we prove we also love our neighbors. And then it must also be true that if we love our superiors we will naturally show it by obeying them for Your sake.”

When the Lord speaks to your conscience, write it down and pray over it. God may give you another consolation as confirmation of what you just heard in prayer.

Let us continue our mental prayer with a meditation from Saint. Alphonsus Liguori:

I will Obey Your Word, Teach Others to Follow You

Obedience to God, A Great Reward

by St. Alphonsus Liguori (The School of Christian perfection, ch. 7)

St. Augustine says that while Adam through disobedience brought destruction upon himself and all his posterity, the Son of God became man to redeem us and to teach us true wisdom by His life of obedience. For this reason He began as a child to practice obedience when He was subject to Mary and Joseph: “He was subject to them,” says St. Luke (2:51).

What our Savior began as a child He continued His whole life, so that St. Paul could say: “He was obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.” (Phil. 2:8). The Mother of God revealed to one of her servants that Our Lord when dying for us entertained a very special love for obedient souls. To increase our merit, Our Lord desires us to be guided by faith. Therefore, instead of speaking to us Himself, He makes His Will known to us by means of our superiors.

When Jesus appeared to St. Paul and converted him on the road to Damascus, the future Apostle said: “Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?” The Lord could easily have instructed him then and there, but He did not; He merely said: “Arise and go into the city, and there it shall be told thee what thou must do.” (Acts 9:7).

Accordingly, St. Giles maintains that we gain more merit by obeying man for the love of God than by obeying God Himself. When we obey lawful superiors we are more sure of doing the Will of God than if Jesus Christ Himself would appear and speak to us. Such an apparition might afford us no certainty that it really was our Savior who appeared and spoke; the evil spirit can appear as an angel of light in order to deceive us. But when we receive a command from our superiors, we are certain that in obeying them we are obeying Jesus Christ Himself. “He that heareth you, heareth me.” (Luke 10:16).

Are You Listening?

Contemplate Jesus as the source of eternal Love. Meditate on how the gift of obedience to the law of the Lord is a form of holy love.  Think about the importance of obedience that St. Alphonsus Liguori teaches us about. Humbly ask the Lord to give you a desire to be obedient to God and your superiors. Ask him to increase in you the love needed to overcome all obstacles to grace.
