Pray the Penitential Rosary for Our Lady of Akita

On December 26, 1970, Our Lord taught Maria Concepcion Zuniga Lopez how to recite the Penitential Rosary.  Jesus Himself dictated that this Penitential Rosary is to be recited with love, remembering His Passion.

The penitential rosary is an opportunity to make sacrifices for sinners in an act of love for God. This penitential rosary can be said in a holy hour. It will pray the Divine Office of the Holy Spirit all at once, the early morning prayers, first hour of daylight prayers, the 9 am prayers, noon prayers, 3 pm prayers, evening prayers, and finally night prayers. The penitential rosary will take over an hour to pray in its entirety when prayed this way.  In October 2019, Our Lady of Akita gave Sr Sasagawa a message asking us to pray this rosary. We are asked to pray the penitential rosary in reparation for sin.

About the Penitential Rosary

by Rev. Mother Maria Concepcion Zuniga Lopez and given an Imprimi Potest by Sac. J.F. Gaudze, m.f., Superior, Vergel, Mexico.

On December 26, 1970, Our Lord taught Maria Concepcion Zuniga Lopez how to recite the Penitential Rosary.  Jesus Himself dictated that this Penitential Rosary is to be recited with love, remembering His Passion.

This is a new manner of reciting the Holy Rosary, combined with the Divine Office of the Holy Spirit. It is to be offered in reparation for the numberless crimes committed daily in the world against our infinite and merciful God. We must pray it to implore God’s mercy and pardon for our own sins and the sins of our brethern. The recitation of this rosary will give us the grace of conversion, will help us to have a sincere sacramental confession, and to amend our lives.

The prayers of the Divine Office change each day, and one could use the prayers of the day here: universalis.com/readings or use the prayers chosen below for this penitential rosary.

“I can perform prodigies such as men are far from imagining. Understand once and for all: I need nothing from you except faith and obedience to My commands, and this, for the benefit of you yourselves. Listen, therefore, now, once more: Pay attention to My words, if you do not want Me to abandon you forever. I will found My kingdom with those who are faithful, although they may be few. Understand: My Justice will be magnified and glorified as much by the just man who is saved, as by the obstinate man who is condemned. Therefore, pay attention to My words; let everyone believe and fulfill My messages given to the world. Respect My churches and, even more, the altars. Do not profane them! Let Christian women show themselves as such with their modesty, imitating My most holy Mother, Who is their model. Let the Penitential Rosary be prayed; I have dictated it."

Opening Prayers

Pray the Penitential Rosary

℣. Now, with a spirit of penance, let us kneel. And, with arms extended in the form of a Cross, let us meditate on each Mystery of the Rosary.

Each Mystery will be alternated with the Divine Office of the Holy Spirit, thus we will pray all at once (or it can be prayed over the course of the day if prayed privately):

Matins and Lauds (early morning prayers before dawn),
Prime (first hour of daylight),
Terce (third hour prayers prayed at 9 am),
Sext (noon prayers),
None (9th hour prayers prayed at 3 pm),
Vespers (sunset evening prayers), and
Compline (night prayers). May it be for the glory of God!

Let us begin the Penitential Rosary devoutly and kneeling in reparation for poor sinners and for the mercy of God:

The Sign of the Cross

℣. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Act of Contrition

All: O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee; and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and worthy of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

Apostle's Creed

℣. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven; sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

℟. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father

All: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Three Hail Marys

℣. Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with Thee; blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

℟. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Let us Pray

℣. O God, open Thou our lips, to praise and bless Thy most holy name, and the name of Thy Blessed Mother; that we may attentively and devoutly recite this Rosary and merit to be heard in the sight of Thy Divine Majesty. Amen.

All: Thou art Perpetual Help benign; come, therefore, I implore Thee.

℣. Come, hasten to assist me, 0 Mother sweet and kind.

℟. Blessed be the Holy and Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God.

While meditating on the First Mystery of the Holy Rosary, extend your arms in the form of a cross, and recite the first decade of the Rosary, devoutly

First Sorrowful Mystery
of the Penitential Rosary

℣.  AGONY IN THE GARDEN: Jesus sweats blood in the garden the night before he was killed.

℣. Dear Jesus, You lived 33 years among us, knowing what would happen to You, and yet You kept going, You had power You could have used to avoid this much suffering but You accepted it all to save us. You sweated blood thinking of how You would die so horribly the next day. In Your agony You asked Your Father to take away the suffering, but brought Yourself back quickly, and asked Him to let His Will, not Yours,  be done in You. Help me to also want God’s Will, Your will, to be done in my life, not mine. Teach me how to control myself even when I know I can change a situation; give me the strength to do what is right in the eyes of God alone. Forgive me my sins that caused You that much pain, and thank You for loving me so much.

Now pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys.

All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Now with arms rested, recite the Little Office of the Holy Spirit

Early Morning Prayers before Dawn

Matins

℣. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord.

℟. And my mouth shall shew forth Thy praise.

℣. Incline unto mine aid, O God.

℟. O Lord, make haste to help me.

℣. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,

℟. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.

All: Praise be to Thee, O Lord, King of everlasting glory.

Invitatory

℣. Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified.

℟. Oh, come, let us adore Him!

Hymn

All: Oh, may the Passion of the Lord, Whereby salvation is restored, The mind with love for Him inspire, Our solace and our hearts’ desire. In memory, let us ever hold, Christ’s thorny crown, His pains untold, The bitter cross whereon He died, The nails, the lance that pierced His Side. And may we constantly recall The reed, the vinegar, the gall, The anguish of that last dread hour, Those Sacred Wounds whence graces shower. O, may these thoughts our souls imbue With sweetness of celestial dew, ‘Til, fostered by His tender care, The glorious fruits of grace they bear. O crucified, we worship Thee And beg with all our hearts that we May be united through Thy love
With all the saints in Heav’n above. To Christ, the Lord of Majesty, Betrayed and sold to set us free, Who suffered on the cruel tree, Be praise and honor endlessly.

Psalm 94

℣. Come, let us praise the Lord with joy; let us joyfully sing to God our Saviour.Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise to Him with psalms.  For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For in His hand are all the ends of the earth; and the heights of the mountains are His. For the sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us. For He is the Lord our God; and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.  Today, if you shall hear His voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works. Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in their hearts. And these men have not known My ways: so I sware in My wrath that they shall not enter into My rest.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Invitatory

℣. Christ is captured and put to scorn, scourged and crucified.

℟. Oh, come, let us adore Him!

Antiphon

All: Men without mercy rose up against Me, and they spared not my life.

℣. I have forsaken my house; I have left mine inheritance.

℟. I have given my dear soul into the hands of sinners.

℣. May the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ bring us to the joys of Paradise.

℟. Amen.

℣. Through His holy Passion, may our Lord grant unto us His benediction.

All: Amen.

First Lesson

℣. Pilate took Jesus, and scourged Him. And the soldiers, platting a crown of thorns, put it upon His head: and they put on Him a purple garment. And they came to Him and said: Hail, King of the Jews. And they buffeted Him and, spitting upon Him, they took the reed and struck His Head.

All: But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Thanks be to God.

℣. The ancients consulted together, that, by subtlety, they might apprehend Jesus and put Him to death. They went out, as it were to a robber, with swords and clubs.

℟. Through the might of His Holy Cross, may our Lord bring us to the joys of light and truth.

All: Amen.

Second Lesson

℣. But the soldiers took Jesus and led Him forth, and, bearing His own cross, He went forth to that place which is called Calvary but, in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him and, with Him, two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst. And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

℟. But Thou, Lord, have mercy upon us.

All:  And when they had laid hands on Jesus and taken Him, He said to them:

℣. I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you laid not hands on Me, and lo!, you scourge Me and lead Me to be crucified.

℟. May the sprinkling of Christ’s Blood be our everlasting health and protection.

All: Amen.

Third Lesson

℣.  Afterwards, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said: “I thirst.” Now there was a vessel set there full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar about hyssop, put it to His mouth. Jesus, therefore, when He had taken the vinegar, said:
It is consummated. And, bowing His head, He gave up the ghost.

℟. But Thou, Lord, have mercy upon us.

℣. Darkness covered the earth, whilst the Jews crucified Jesus. And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice:

All:  My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?

℣. Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into Thy hands I commend My Spirit. And, bowing down His head, He gave up the ghost.

All: pause and meditate on our Lord’s death with head bowed.

Next we pray the Lauds.

Hymn

All: Gabriel, Archangel, came To a world in wait, And brought with him the fruitful grace Of Heaven’s Advocate; The Blessed Virgin to prepare For Her exalted state – May that creative, fruitful grace inundate the hearts of pilgrims.

Psalm 2

℣. Why have the Gentiles raged, and the people devised vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together against the Lord, and against His Christ. Let us break their bonds asunder, and let us cast away their yoke from us. He that dwelleth in Heaven shall laugh at them: and the Lord shall deride them. Then shall He speak to them in His anger, and trouble them in His rage. But I am appointed King by Him over Sion, His holy mountain, preaching His commandment. The Lord hath said to Me: Thou art My Son. This day have I begotten Thee. Ask of Me and I will give Thee the Gentiles for Thine inheritance, and the utmost parts of the earth for Thy possession. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, and shall break them in pieces, like a potter’s vessel. And now, O ye kings, understand: receive instruction, you that judge the earth. Serve ye the Lord with fear: and rejoice unto Him with trembling. Embrace discipline, lest, at any time, the Lord be angry, and you perish from the just way. When His wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they that trust in Him.

Antiphon

℣. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful.

℟. And enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

℣. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created.

℟. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

℣. O Lord, hear my prayer.

℟. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let Us Pray

℣.  Continually assist us with the power of the Holy Spirit, we beseech Thee, O Lord; that through Thy mercy, our hearts may be purified and delivered from all evil. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.

All: Amen.

℣. Let us bless the Lord.

℟. Thanks be to God.

℣. SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR: Jesus is badly beaten at the Pillar

℣.  Dear Jesus, I am so sorry that one for whom You gave Your life, betrayed You. You were beaten up so badly, they tore up Your skin, they didn’t have mercy on You, and they hurt You just to please themselves. Please dear Jesus, help me to love You, to appreciate You, and never allow me to complain about injustice done to me, but to love beyond the cross.

℣. THE CROWNING OF THORNS:  Jesus was crowned with thorns after being beaten.

℣. My Dear King, You were mocked after they beat You, and crowned You with thorns and yet You are the TRUE King. With the pain and humiliation You felt, You didn’t respond to anything unkindly. You did what Your human strength allowed, without uttering a word of insult or complaint, or using Your Godly power. You had me and my brothers and sisters instead to defend and protect. Hoping we would listen to Your warnings, accept Your sacrifice and make a better choice to be with You one day in a paradise forever. Help me to remain in truth, to support truth and acknowledge truth even when I am wrong. ℣. CARRYING OF THE CROSS: Jesus was given a heavy cross to carry after being beaten and crowned with thorns.

℣. Dear Jesus, You carried the cross over the wounds of the beatings and thorns. I am so sorry for what You had to go through. You fell down many times, at the heaviness of Your cross and You rose again. Dear Jesus, You are the most loving being that ever lived, You took all that willingly, for me and everyone else. It was not a quick death, they tortured You all day, and You still remained kind. You met Your Mother on the way which gave You strength to have Her support but also pain to see Her suffering so badly. Teach me to love Her and to love You. Mother Mary, You who saw everything, thank Him for me, kiss His scars for me, and remind him that despite my sins I love Him dearly.

Psalms 126 (127)

℣. If the Lord does not build the house, its builders labor in vain. If the Lord does not watch over a city, its watchmen guard it in vain. It is vain for you to rise before the dawn and go late to your rest, eating the bread of toil – to those he loves, the Lord gives sleep. The Lord bestows sons as an heirloom, the fruit of the womb as a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior – so are the sons of one’s youth. Happy the man who fills his quiver thus: when he disputes with his enemies at the gate,  he will not be the loser.

℟. If the Lord does not build the house, its builders labor in vain.

While meditating on the Fifth Mystery of the Holy Rosary, extend your arms in the form of a cross, and recite the fifth decade of the Rosary, devoutly.

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery
of the Penitential Rosary

℣. DYING ON THE CROSS: Jesus was hanged on the cross and died.

℣. Dear Jesus, Before You died You forgave those who killed You, teaching us to forgive without measure. In the middle of such crushing pain, You gave us Your Mother Mary to also be our Mother so she could comfort us as she comforted You. Please continue to remind me of the heavy price You paid for me so I can remember this all my life; remind me to obey You and help me to remember every word You said and try to put it in practice. Like the thief on Your right side, I am not worthy for heaven but please remember me when I get to Your kingdom and have mercy on all sinners.

Now pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys.

All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

Now, with arms rested, continue the Holy Rosary as usual, by reciting:

Hail Holy Queen

℣. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Our life, our sweetness and our hope! To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To Thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. 0 clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

℟. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God!

℣. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray

℣. All: Love of the Father and the Son, Come always, come and aid us; Come quickly now and guide our steps And let Thy light pervade us; So when the Judge of all mankind On Justice’ scales has weighed us, May He have, forevermore, To Thy right side conveyed us.

Psalm 129 (130)

℣. Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears listen out for the voice of my pleading. If you took notice of our transgressions, Lord – Lord, who would be left? But with you is forgiveness, and for this we revere you. I rely on you, Lord, my spirit relies on your promise; my soul hopes in the Lord, more than the watchman for daybreak. More than the watchman for daybreak, let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is kindness and abundant redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all its transgressions. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Consecration Prayer to the Most Sacred heart of Jesus from Our Lady of Akita by Sister Agnes Sasagawa

More about the Penitential Rosary

The Penitential Rosary of Padre Pio: The Mysteries of the Rosary are commemorated on each of the large beads. On each of the 50 small beads, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, one Glory Be to the Father, and the ejaculation: ‘Hail Mary Most Pure, conceived without original sin.’ As in the traditional Rosary, the Creed is said on the crucifix.

  1. I am a professed Lay Cistercian (Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery (Trappist) in Conyers, Georgia. By chance, in trying to become more penitential and in reparation for my sins and those of others, the Holy Spirit somehow led me to the website of Our Lady of Akita. This is precisely what I had been looking for for some years. I have dedicated whatever time I have remaining (I am 85 years old) to repentance for my sins of the past (mostly ignoring Jesus right in front of me) and to pray for those in purgatory, the Church Universal, and the whole world. I recite the sorrowful mysteries every day in addition to my other Cistercian prayers and Lectio Divina. My website, https://thecenterforcontemplativepractice.org, contains many references to Our Lady of Akita, which is also the inspiration for my writings.
