Blood of Jesus protection prayers have a long history in the Church for their efficacy in protecting us from evil. Some Christians may be familiar with being taught to say a prayer “to cover yourself with the Blood of Jesus“, others are familiar with novenas and litanies to the Precious Blood of Jesus.
Why do we pray to cover ourselves with the Blood of Jesus?
We pray to cover ourselves with the Blood of Jesus because He is sacrificed for us as expiation for our sins. Jesus is the spotless victim that frees us from the law by appeasing God the Father and acting as our mediator. Jesus is the new mercy seat. He covers over our sins that separate us from God through our inability to adhere to His law. The crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Christ conquered the curse of death and gives us the opportunity to commune with God through Him.
On this page we will walk you through a special time of prayer and reflection with the LORD. The prayers and reflections on this page will take at least 30 minutes. Begin by putting yourself in the presence of God and then begin with a prayer to the Holy Spirit. You can put yourself in the presence of God by closing your eyes and imagining yourself with Him. Picture Christ on the Cross, see His suffering, then imagine Him putting His gaze on you. Enter into this gaze. See the love in His eyes. See the wounds. Hear the groans of love for your soul.
Let us begin.

Let us begin our time of prayer and meditation on the Precious Blood of Jesus by invoking the Holy Spirit.
Prayer for the Guidance of the Holy Spirit
Dear Holy Spirit, my Advocate, I praise You and Glorify You and Bless You. I give You my homage as the Third Person of the holy Trinity. I beg you for mercy and I humbly ask You for the gift of enlightenment as I pray the Holy Scriptures and seek protection from the Evil One through the power of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, my Savior. I ask all this in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, AMEN.
The Power of Precious Blood of Jesus Protection
Our Precious Blood of Jesus protection has Biblical roots and theological meaning. Before praying a prayer to cover yourself with the Blood of Jesus let us contemplate the meaning behind the words we use to petition God.
Let us meditate on the holiness of God, on God’s holy covenant with man, and on the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross in expiation for our sins. Jesus became our scapegoat, our sacrifice, the perfect lamb, to reconcile us to God the Father.
Let us ponder this for a moment. Let us think of our sins and failings and how holy our Eternal Father is, and that our only hope of communion with the Father is through His Son (John 14:6-7).
O Jesus, Sacrificial Lamb, my Savior, I thank You and praise You for Your suffering on the Cross in atonement for my sins. I owe You my life and I could never repay You.
In the Old Testament, after God delivered the people out of slavery to Egypt, He entered into a conditional covenant with Moses and the people of Israel. This covenant instructs them that if they follow God’s commands they will be blessed but if they break these commands it will bring negative consequences upon them, a curse.
It is a blood covenant.
Let us meditate on the Word of God.
In Exodus 20:24 the blood covenant is explained:
“[And the Lord said to Moses] An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen; in every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you” (Exodus 20:24)
In Exodus 24: 6-8 we read:
“And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. Then he took the book of the covenant, and read it in the hearing of the people; and they said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” And Moses took the blood and threw it upon the people, and they said, “Behold the blood of the covenant which the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
Precious Blood of Jesus, how many times have I broken my covenant and sinned against You? I have sinned so many times I cannot even quantify it. I am ashamed of my sin and the ways I have broken my covenant with the Almighty God to choose my own selfish wants and needs. This has left me seeking Your mercy and forgiveness. I cannot live without the protection of Your Most Precious Blood.
Blood of Jesus Protection: the Roots
Let us contemplate the old covenant in blood and how this was replaced with the Blood of Jesus protection.
In the Old Testament, before the coming of Christ, as part of the blood of the covenant made with God, Moses was instructed by God to build a mercy seat of pure gold, which included two angels on either side of the Ark of the Covenant. The angels were to be designed to spread their wings, overshadowing the ark. Moses was instructed to place within the ark certain items: the Ten Commandments, the manna from heaven contained in a pot, and Aaron’s rod (Hebrews 9:4).
Let’s try to understand the meaning behind the tablets, the manna, and the rod. The first three commandments are laws regarding how we ought to love God and honor Him. The 7 additional commandments are regarding how we ought to love and treat our neighbor. The manna from heaven is a prefiguration of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, as He taught the people in John Chapter 6.
But do we understand why the Lord asked for the rod of Aaron to be included in the ark? What does it represent?
The rod of Aaron represents the tribe of Levi. Remember, in Hebrews 9:4 we are told it put forth buds. This is a reference to the exclusive calling of the priesthood. The priesthood is precious to God and it is a tribe set aside for a special purpose, which is highlighted in Hebrews chapter 9.
The name of the Savior God was invoked only once in the year by the high priest in atonement for the sins of Israel, after he had sprinkled the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies with the sacrificial blood. The mercy seat was the place of God's presence. When St. Paul speaks of Jesus whom "God put forward as an expiation by his blood," he means that in Christ's humanity "God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself."
CCC 433
What does this mean?
Precious Blood of Jesus to Atone for Sins
In Leviticus, we learn about the day of atonement, a ritual day of prayer and confession where the congregants remember their sins and disobedience to God’s commandments. We learn about the holiness of God and how He wants to be worshipped. And we learn about His love and mercy for His people.
Let us Mediate on the Word of God.
We read in Leviticus 16:11-19:
Thus shall Aaron offer his bull for the purification offering, to make atonement for himself and for his family. When he has slaughtered it, he shall take a censer full of glowing embers from the altar before the LORD, as well as a double handful of finely ground fragrant incense, and bringing them inside the veil, there before the LORD he shall put incense on the fire, so that a cloud of incense may shield the cover that is over the covenant, else he will die. Taking some of the bull’s blood, he shall sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the ark’s cover and likewise sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times in front of the cover. Then he shall slaughter the goat of the people’s purification offering, and bringing its blood inside the veil, he shall do with it as he did with the bull’s blood, sprinkling it on the ark’s cover and in front of it. Thus he shall purge the inner sanctuary of all the Israelites’ impurities and trespasses, including all their sins. He shall do the same for the tent of meeting, which is set up among them in the midst of their uncleanness. No one else may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters the inner sanctuary to make atonement until he departs. When he has made atonement for himself and his household, as well as for the whole Israelite assembly, he shall come out to the altar before the LORD and purge it also. Taking some of the bull’s and the goat’s blood, he shall put it on the horns around the altar, and with his finger sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times. Thus he shall purify it and sanctify it from the impurities of the Israelites.
Let’s look at Romans 3:23-25:
All have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood, to prove his righteousness because of the forgiveness of sins previously committed.
Lord, the Word of God convicts my soul of many broken promises and broken covenants. I am in need of your mercy and for Your Precious Blood to cover me.
Lord, am I Impure? What in me needs to be Purified?
Take a moment to consider sins of impurity that you have committed against God but have not confessed. Ask the LORD to show you sins that need confessing.

Come, Holy Spirit, into my soul.

A Prayer for Protection from Evil
Jesus, I plead Your Precious Blood over my body, mind, soul, and spirit; my past healings; my conscious and my sub-conscious; my family, friends, and possessions; my intellect and my will; my feelings, thoughts, and emotions; my words and actions; my vocation, my role in my family, my relationships, and sexuality. Protect with Your Precious Blood my work, finances, ministries, all other activities–all that I am and all that I do. (Personal Intentions.) Lord, I dedicate all of these things to You, and I acknowledge You as Lord and Master of all.
In Your Name, Lord Jesus Christ, I ask You to bind, silence, and separate Satan, and all his evil spirits that are coming against me, any of my loved ones, or any of my possessions. Lord Jesus, I ask you to command Satan and all of his companion spirits to depart from me and go directly to the foot of Your Cross, never to return to us again.
Father, I ask that our bodies, minds, souls, and spirits be washed clean and healed by the Holy Spirit, and I ask the Holy Spirit to dwell in us forever.
I ask you, Blessed Mother, through the grace of your Immaculate Conception, to intercede for our protection. I ask You, Eternal Father, to release St. Michael the Archangel, and all the angels to surround us, protect us, and minister to us.
Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, and Blessed Mother, I thank You, I praise You, and I love You.
AMEN.
