Lent is forty days of walking with Jesus toward the Cross and the empty tomb—and this page is here to walk that road with you, one week at a time. Each week of Lent, you’ll find a short reflection drawn from that week’s daily Mass readings, along with a full meditation for every weekday, from Ash Wednesday through Spy Wednesday of Holy Week. Because the Church uses the same Scripture readings for Lent every year, this series offers two sets of meditations, one for Year 1 and another for Year 2, so that you can return next year to experience the readings in a new way.

Meditations After Ash Wednesday
Lent opens with a choice: life or death, blessing or curse, laid out plainly in Deuteronomy — and Jesus doesn’t soften it, calling us to take up our cross daily. By Friday and Saturday, the readings turn to what fasting is actually for: not a performance, but a return to mercy, justice, and a heart open enough for Jesus to call sinners — like Levi — to His table.
Meditations for the First Week of Lent
This week is about how we treat the people right in front of us. We meet the coming judgment in Matthew 25 (“whatever you did for the least of these”), Jesus teaching us to pray simply and forgive freely in the Our Father, Jonah’s reluctant call to Nineveh, and a hard, beautiful command to love our enemies. It’s a week that asks less “how do I feel about God” and more “how am I living toward others.”

Mercy takes center stage — “be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” — alongside a sharp warning against religious pride and hypocrisy. Midweek, the Solemnity of St. Joseph interrupts with quiet, faithful obedience. The week builds toward Joseph sold by his brothers, echoing forward to Christ’s own rejection, and closes with the Prodigal Son — perhaps Lent’s most tender parable of return.

Healing runs through this week — Naaman’s stubborn pride giving way to humble obedience, and a hometown that refuses to believe its own prophet. The Annunciation breaks in with sudden joy midweek. By the end, we hear “you shall love the Lord your God, and your neighbor as yourself,” and meet the humble tax collector who simply prays, “have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Water and life flow through this week — a royal official’s faith healing his son from a distance, a paralyzed man healed at Bethesda’s pool, a river flowing from the Temple. But an undercurrent of conflict grows too, as opposition to Jesus sharpens and the readings begin quietly pointing toward the Passion still to come.
