Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus offers the soul a beautiful opportunity to open their heart to grace. These two prayers were written by St. John Cardinal Henry Newman (1801-1890). John Henry Newman was a renowned 19th century convert to Catholicism from Anglicanism.  In 2010 he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI and in 2019 he was canonized by Pope Francis.

Sacred Heart of jesus Prayer

by John Henry Newman

Most Sacred,

most loving Heart of Jesus,

You are concealed

in the Holy Eucharist,

And You beat for us still.

Now, as then, You say:

“With desire I have desired.”

I worship You

with all my best love and awe,

With fervent affection,

With my most subdued,

most resolved will.

For a while

You take up Your abode within me.

O make my heart

beat with Your Heart!

Purify it of all that is earthly,

All that is proud and sensual,

All that is hard and cruel,

Of all perversity,

Of all disorder,

Of all deadness.

So fill it with You,

That neither the events of the day,

Nor the circumstances of the time,

May have the power to ruffle it;

But that in Your love

and Your fear,

It may have peace.

Amen.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus Prayer

by John Henry Newman

O Sacred Heart of Jesus,

living and quickening source

of eternal life,

infinite treasure of the Divinity

and burning furnace of divine love.

You are my refuge and my sanctuary,

O my amiable Saviour.

Consume my heart

with that burning fire

with which Your Heart

is ever inflamed.

Pour down on my soul

those graces

which flow from Your love

and let my heart

be so united with Yours,

that our wills may be one

and mine may in all things,

be conformed to Yours.

May Your divine will

be equally the standard

and rule of all my desires

and of all my actions.

Amen

The Spiritual benefits of a Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

It is altogether impossible to enumerate the heavenly gifts which devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has poured out on the souls of the faithful, purifying them, offering them heavenly strength, rousing them to the attainment of all virtues.”   Pope Pius XII

“Our Lord Jesus Christ desires that we should, for sanctifying ourselves, glorify His all-loving heart; for it was His Heart that suffered the most in His sacred humanity.”   Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

“Once the Lord said to me, ‘Act like a beggar who does not back away when he gets more alms [than he asked for], but offers thanks the more fervently. You too, should not back away and say that you are not worthy of receiving greater graces when I give them to you. I know you are unworthy, but rejoice all the more and take as many treasures from My Heart as you can carry, for then you will please Me more. And I will tell you one more thing – take these graces not only for yourself, but also for others; that is, encourage the souls with whom you come in contact to trust in My infinite mercy. Oh, how I love those souls who have complete confidence in Me – I will do everything for them.'”   St. Faustina Diary, 294
