The St. Rita Novena Prayer for the Impossible
Why Pray to St. Rita of Cascia?
St. Rita of Cascia led a miraculous life, but it was also a life of tremendous suffering. Christians pray the St. Rita novena to ask for St. Rita’s intercession because she is a saint known for petitions to God for impossible causes.
St. Rita of Cascia was known as a gentle woman who had the virtue of humility and lived a life of holiness both as a wife and mother and also later in her life as a nun.
Saint Rita of Cascia’s parents were old and worried about how she would be supported in life when they passed away, so they offered her in marriage to a wealthy man who was immoral and quick-tempered when she was still young.
This was customary at the time. St. Rita’s husband was unfaithful in the marriage, insulted her often, and was physically abusive for nearly 18 years, but she prayed for him and remained faithful. She prayed and tried to convince Paolo to change his ways, but one day he was murdered in a brawl and left her widowed with two teenage sons. She forgave her husband’s murderers. Then she prayed fervently that her sons would not avenge the death of their father, as she did not want them to commit a mortal sin. Both her sons developed a childhood illness, and they eventually died of sickness shortly thereafter, so at the age of 36 St. Rita entered a monastery to begin her religious life.
St. Rita overcame suffering with the help of her faith in God. St. Rita can intercede for couples who are struggling with troubled marriages, as her prayers are known to bring love and peace back into relationships.
